Achievements and Performance

SORP
reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The Society provided its full range of services and
activities during 2020, despite the problems
arising from the Covid-19 pandemic and
subsequent restrictions on travel and
association. For the first time the AGM was held
via Zoom, combined with an online lecture, and
attracted a larger number of participants than in
previous years, including overseas members.
While the Society was able to arrange only one
meeting in its customary way, it began a series of
online lectures and performances which were
highly appreciated by its members as evidenced
by a survey. The committee of trustees also met
via Zoom, thus reducing travel expenses. The viol
hire scheme was not unduly affected by
lockdowns, members being permitted to extend
their use of instruments until such time as
restrictions permitted their return. Publications
continued as usual, with publication of four
editions of the newsletter and online availability
of thejournal.

Additional information

Achievements against
objectives set
Para 1.41 The move to online activities made the Society’s
activities accessible by a wider range of its
members, especially those living outside UK.
Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set
Para 1.41 Donations from members exceeded 2019 by
more than 200%, largely to increase the funds
available for distribution as grants to assist young
players’ tuition costs.

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The Society ended 2020 in a satisfactory financial
position, with a surplus on annual turnover of

planned physical meetings that were unable to
proceed.

policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held

cover at least one year’s operational costs, in

Deposits for the hire scheme are refundable and so are not the Society's money. For that reason they are shown separately.

£1450 of the deposits are for viols currently on hire. The balance is old deposits that have never been returned. Over £2000 was received in 2018 or earlier years and the identity of the hirer cannot be identified for £1200. The committee has decided to transfer £2000 of unclaimed deposits to the General Fund. If these hirers request a refund in future, it will be made from the General Fund.

Independent Examiner's Statement for accounts to 31 December 2020

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (a) which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect, the general requirements to keep accounting in accordance with UK accounting principles have not been met, and (b) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
