OUR PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES Our primary alm Is to promote the odvoncement and improvement of generol education in relotlon to all ospects of the art of drama ond the development of public appreciation of such art, tjnd to moke occosional small donotion5 to other choritie5 e5tabli5hedfor other objects. Dawlish Amateur Repertory Company is a volut)tary organisation which owns, manages and operates the Shaftesbury Theatre In Dawlish, Devon. The Shaftesbury Theatre Is a Victorian building which was converted to a theatre in 1959 and over the year5 has contributed much io the people of Dawlish, the surrounding area and its many visitors. It benefits the public by providlng access to the performance of drama, music, dance, film and the vlsual arts at an affowdable cost, that they would otheNiise have to travel further afield to flnd. The Trustees have had due regard to the charity commission's public benefit 8uidance and are confldent that the rnaSn activities of the Charty. which are summarised later in this report, further Its charitable purposes for the publlc benefrt. AcnviTIES IN 2023124 Stsge performance5 Our usual core activities are the presentatlon of a sea50n of plays and a pantomime. These productions continue to be popular and we endeavour to present a balanced programme with as much varlety as possible. We recognise the Importance of reaching out to a wider audience and of presenting educational and challenging produttions f rom time to time. The annual season runs from October each year and In 2023124 we presented a full season of shows comprisingfive playsand a pantomime. Yoirth group We are delighted that our Youth Group has continued to flourish. Sessions are normally held once a week during temtlme and are well attended. The groupls open to anyone of secondary school age. All leaders have current DBS check5 and are trained as Chaperones by Devon County Council.
Theatre hire We hire out the Shaftesbury Theatre both to local organisations and for visitTng touring show5 and in 2023124 there was a healthy level of demand for this. The hirers of the theatre included Dawli5h Musical Theatre Company• Wonder Pantomimes, Our Star Theatre Company. Turn the Tide and various trite arts. Clnema We normally show at teastone film a month, mainly underthe auspices of theTeignmouth Film Society which now presents its films at the Shaftesbury Theatre. We also have started our own series of afternoon films which is proving to be increaslngly popular. There Is a wide screen that fills the front of the stage and whlch has surround sound speakers. We airn lo present an authentic cinema atmosphere at a price and in a local venue whlch enables our audiences to enjoy films thatthey otherwise would not be able to see without travelllng further afield. Dawlish does not otherwise have a dedicated cinema. FINANCE The flnanclal statements comply with the quiremertts of the Charities Att 2011 and are in accordance with the Stalement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and ReportSn8 by CharStles and wlth the Flnancial Reporting Standard FRS 102. Incorne and expendlture The Statement of Financial Activlties for the year ended 31st August 2024 showed total income of £70,471, compared with total income of É62,783 In the previous year. We are pleased that our level of income has continued to increase following the enforced closure of the theatre resulting from the Covid epidemic in 2020 and 2021. There was a net loss for the year of £ll,C66 compared wlth a loss of £5,401 In 2022123. Much of this loss was attributable to depreciation charges and there was a reduction In bank and investment balances of only £5.755. Weare pleased thatthis wa5 achleved even though we invested £25,567 on maintenance and new equipment, which included new LED lights and extensive redecoration of the bar and bacbta8e areas. The Trustees contlnue to monitor and review costs, while endeavouring to maintain the fabric of the building to as high a standard as possible for the benefit of our patrons and hirers. The theatre buildin8 is our principal asset and continues to be our main expense. We take our responsibllity for protecting. maintaining and enhanclng the Shaftesbury Theatre very serlously and most of our income Is used for the benefit of the theatre. Assets and Llabllfties As at 31st August 2024 the net book value of the freehold property, fixtures and fittings was £434,697 12023: £442,510), and the value of cash and investments was £106,855 12023: £112,610). The Charity has no debts other than those relating to routine trade creditors. We are pleased that after what ha5 been a difficult few years for all theatres our finances continue to be in a healthy position.
Reser¥es policy It is the policy of the Charity to maintain unrestricted cash fund5 of at least £10.0 to enable the charity to continue to operate in the erfent of unforeseen fluctuations in income. Communlty support and Sn50f$h1P In terms of support from the communrty, althou8h the theatre ts normally self-sustaining, we are gratefu I for assistance from the local and district counclls whenever they are able to support us in specific activities. We recognise that while the Arts is not a prirnary service for the councils. whose fInanS are urKler inueasing pressure, we provide a key role in delivering accesslble arts and drama to Dawllsh and the surrounding area, which 1$ greatly valued by the people we serve. Many local buslnesses advertlse In Our programmes and this not only generates much needed funds but helps us to keep down the cost of the programmes for our patrons. We are very grateful to the owners of these buslnesses and are always looklng for innovative ways of increasing our association with them. STRucfuRE ANO GOVERNANCE The Charity Is an Assoclatlon which 15 8overned by a constltutlon adopted In April 1970, and amended both in November 2018 and Novernber 2022. Management The operational management ol the theatre continues to take a large amount of time for a small group of people dedicated to the management, maintenance and operatlon of the theatre, both for the Repertory Company productlons and for the use of other groups. The commlttee of Trustees nomialty cornprlses a chair, a vlce-chair. a secretary and a treasurer, wlth up to 6 other members. They are eEected by the full members of the Company present at the Annual General Meetin& which is open to all paid up members of the Company. All the people involved give their time freely and voluntarity. The Company could not contlnue its work wlthout their effort5 and we are most grateful to them.
