SCALBY VILLAGE TRUST ANNUAL REPORT 2024

The aim of the Trust continues to be to:

‘To promote the permanent preservation of lands and buildings of beauty or historic interest in and around Scalby and Newby, and generally to protect the character of our area’

2024 was another hectic year. In the Temperance Hall all our tenants were settled continuing to provide services that the community can use. We changed our energy supplier in a bid to save money on gas and electricity and we installed a Honeywell system to the heating allowing the rooms to be heated via App! Hall bookings have remained steady. Pilates, music nights and Scalby Cinema form the core of the activities with a few other ad hoc meetings and events. There is still availability if anyone knows of someone looking for space. The Temperance Hall Facebook and Instagram accounts do very well with 252 and 161 followers respectively.

In the year ahead we plan to do work to the back yard and look at replacing windows at the back of the building if finances allow.

Anyone interested in joining the proposed Hall management team, please come forward.

In March, after our AGM we had an excellent presentation from Chris Hall tracing the history of Scarborough through old maps. In May, Tim Tubbs entertained us with witty tales about Victorian crimes around the town and in September, Nick Gibbons came to speak to us about the ecology and conservation of our local bat population. Thank you again to all our speakers.

Our Neighbourhood Plan Sub-Group met twice and are meeting again before the AGM, so further feedback will be given at the AGM.

Our Trust Facebook account has 647 followers! Please follow us.

We sadly lost several members this year, Alison Annan, Jessica Cathcart and Tom Pindar. All were long standing members and we will miss them.

Please volunteer to become our Hon Treasurer or Hon Secretary. We now do online banking. Neither job is onerous if your Chairman can do them as well.

TREASURER’S REPORT AND ACCOUNTS FOR 2024

Income has been as last year, from Temperance Hall business rental (including proportions of utility bills), community room rental, subscriptions and donations. We have again not maintained our level of subscriptions, indicative of missing a membership secretary.

Trust expenditure has been almost exclusively on the Temperance Hall, namely insurance, utility bills, Scalby Cinema, the heating system, fire equipment maintenance and security.

Scalby Cinema, which the Trust runs as part of further community engagement, incurred overall costs of £2182.60, with total receipts of £2205.60. Pleasing but with good fortune.

Thanks go to Geoff Winn who applied for the Gift Aid on donations, to the tune of a magnificent £7716.43.

Please, could those who do not pay subscriptions by annual direct debit, be encouraged to do so. Many thanks to those who do, often including an extra annual donation. Your ongoing support is gratefully received. Cash on hand for 2024 was £307
