Annual Report 2021 Here for youn9 people Here f communities Here f you
A Message From The Chair
Welcome to our annual report of 2021 which showcases the work of YMCA Barnsley and our work within the local community. For those new to our charity, we are an independent charity, federated to the YMCA movement in England and Wales, that works primarily with children and young people and their families. Having been part of our community since 1857 we are keen to ensure a legacy for the future in our delivery of youth services and support for young people.
Over the last 12 months our work has continued to be impacted by the Covid pandemic, but our fabulous staff team have worked hard to find innovative ways to deliver our services and support our young people. From September we were able to restart building based services, albeit with restrictions still in place, and it has been wonderful to see our young people enjoying our programmes. Our staff and volunteers bring so much to the projects they are involved with and to the wider work of the YMCA and I hope you are inspired as you read about our work.
The Trustees of the organisation have continued to move forward in reviewing and implementing the Strategic Plan and as ever there have been financial challenges, especially in securing funds to meet core costs. As Trustees, we work positively to ensure that young people have the resources and the opportunities to grow and thrive in their communities.
We are delighted that one of our Trustees and long standing members of the YMCA was recognised for her work nationally and internationally when she received the Young Campaigner of the Year at the YMCA Youth Matters Awards in November.
This is my second report as acting Chair and I want to take the opportunity to thank our outgoing Chair, Julie Enoch, for her leadership and contribution to the YMCA over many years.
I hope that like me you will be inspired by our work and want to be a part of our story. If you have skills that would benefit our work we would be delighted to talk to you. If you are able to support us financially, through grants or donations, we would be thrilled to look at ways in which we can achieve this. Young people are at the heart of all we do and we will continue to work to deliver the best for them. - Sue Williams

UNITY PROJECT
Highlights & Key Features of the Year
One of the highlights and key features is having the opportunity of being able to see our young people face to face again. Not only supporting them with their emotional resilience & wellbeing but being able to support them with the little things that mean so much…talking and listening, cooking and eating together, playing games and sharing skills such as growing seeds, sewing and tying shoe laces. We cannot underestimate the value of having a youth worker to listen and provide non-judgemental support when children and young people need to off load. Priceless!
Schools Work – Primary & Secondary
The schools work projects focus on preparing and supporting children and young people through life’s transitions, building positive relationships with them and using a range of engagement tools and activities to facilitate the development of knowledge and skills that contribute to building emotional resilience and positive health and wellbeing in a safe positive, supporting environment. We deliver after schools clubs that support pupils from Y5 to Y9 across 5 primary and 2 secondary schools, building long term relationships with young people and providing consistent support throughout their journey from familiar faces and an established support model they know and trust.
Youth Clubs
We deliver 4 youth clubs providing children and young people with safe spaces in their localities where they can be themselves, socialise and enjoy being part of the youth club community. Where they can build social networks and skills, access a range of youth work activities and opportunities and access support from trusted youth workers.
Holiday Provision
Our holiday provision is extremely important to our youth work model as it allows us to continue to engage with our participants, maintain our relationships and support as well as offering opportunities during a time when many of our children and young people may not have things to do. The holiday provision also provides opportunities to try new and often challenging activities, develop independence and core life skills and, as we have locality specific and project wide activities, the opportunity to meet new people and form new friendships.
North Area Schools Work & Holiday Provision
This project provides access and opportunities for participants who live in the localities of the North Area to engage with positive activities in a safe space with access to skilled and experienced youth workers who can also provide additional support around emotional and mental health.
In Kexborough and Wellgate primary schools we are supporting Y6 children, using arts/ games/ themed projects/group discussion and activities to encourage the development of key resilience and personal and social skills.
“The children who have been involved in working with the In Darton Academy we have engaged with young YMCA on a weekly basis have grown in confidence and resilience. This has been evidenced when the children have people in Y 7 & 8 through our peer support model. been faced with challenges in their learning. They also have had a much more positive attitude and willingness to ‘give it Training and supporting young people to understand a go’. The children look forward to their weekly sessions and this has had a positive impact on their wellbeing and the role of and the skills associated with being a peer relationships with others, they talk with enthusiasm about the sessions! – Thank you YMCA”. supporter so they can use their knowledge and Cathryn Egginton, Headteacher, Wellgate Primary School experiences to support the schools transition model to current and future Y7 students.
“It took me until I attended the February half term program to realise just how much my confidence had grown. It made me remember how in the October holidays I would sit in my own little group and not speak to anyone else. Now I interact with other young people and feel confident doing so”.
- 13 19 PROJECTS
Detached Youth work
Covid restrictions and what felt like a constantly changing landscape proved challenging for street based detached work in general. Different ways of working were invented that proved demanding and relied heavily on those workers on the front line to remain flexible, resolute and innovative with their approach.
During lock downs garden gate youth work became the norm, catching up with young people and their families through open windows and front doors ensured relationships were maintained and support from their youth workers was provided so that once restrictions began to ease again, we could hit the ground running.
Relationships with the wider community and parent involvement is key to some of our provision. We are also fortunate in our partnership with Berneslai Homes who allow us to use their community buildings, which has meant that in inclement weather, we have an option to work indoors.
North Area Project
As weather warmed and restrictions lifted our team rebooted our weekly meet ups focusing mainly on the community of Kexborough and maintaining contacts in Darton and Mapplewell. Team games, arts and craft sessions and community litter picks were frequent activities alongside the usual youth work discussion and group work.
Our team continue to provide quality youth work in the North Area in particular Kexborough and our relationships with the broader community continue to strengthen. Our focus for 2022 is to plan and deliver a community event designed by young people and supported by parent volunteers.
Central Area Project
This project focalises on supporting young people in the communities of Gilroyd and Dodworth. We are working with 2 distinct groups each with unique needs, challenges and issues.
Engagement with one of these groups of older young people is very much around maintaining consistent relationships and boundaries, advocating on their behalf, responding to immediate issues and challenges, promoting more positive choices and wider community development.
Another group meet us on a weekly basis and engage enthusiastically with activities. Whilst at the younger end of our age range, this group can present as quite mature for their years given appropriate activities and environment. Their input to planning and scheduling activities is incredible, and as a group they often meet to discuss their ideas away from our team, then bring their ideas to the table at our weekly sessions. They continue to build on their skills sets and our team look forward to continuing and growing relationships with this group.
Y Stay In
Taking on a different shape in light of restrictions, 2021 was a good year for this youth club. Many of the membership kept in touch throughout the year and rain or shine, as restrictions allowed, some members continued to meet our team on a weekly basis on our community allotment. Often carrying out allotment tasks like fence building and weeding, but often times simply to sit and chat through their week under the shadow of Covid 19. Tea and dunkers were a regular feature of these sessions.
When restrictions allowed Y Stay In continued indoors at our usual home. Whilst numbers were still restricted in spring summer 2021 the members began to plan their youth clubs re-emergence, redesigning a seldom used room and turning it into YMCA Barnsley’s wobble room became our focus. The work on the refit and redesign remains ongoing, volunteers have prepped and began to paint the room and we envisage a launch and grand opening towards the summer of 2022. It has been wonderful to have the youth club open again and be able to provide young people with a safe space that is theirs. “When I come to YMCA it makes me feel so much more confident to speak to people and it makes me feel really safe”
‘The staff are brilliant youth workers and are brilliant with the kids. They have fetched a lot of confidence out in my child. They always make the kids laugh.’ AC
TYI Monday
We have continued to provide accessible and safe youth work opportunities for young people aged 8 – 17 years of age who have SEND (Special Educational Needs).
We delivered individual support and outdoor youth work sessions during the lock downs of 2021 and moved to indoor delivery with the BMBC Targeted Youth Support Service at The Ozone facility in March. Our youth clubs reopened at YMCA Barnsley in May with a change of day to suit the needs of the participants.
In our 2 youth clubs we focus on creating a safe and welcoming space where young people can be themselves, socialise with others and access support from their youth workers. We provide a wide range of positive and social activities which include sports, games, cookery, arts and crafts and activities to build and develop personal, social and independence skills. The programme is led by the young people ensuring they have ownership of the club and it is their space.
Highlights from the year include getting out and about in the warmer months and school holidays with sessions at our allotment, visits to local parks and greens spaces and walks at nature reserves. Developing key skills though cooking and eating together, baking tasty treats such as pancakes, cup cakes and Easter nests and savoury dishes such as pizzas, stir fry’s and pancakes. The young people also developed their communication and group work skills by organising their own pool competition to win a trophy. This also created opportunities to take part in a competition in safe space, learnt to take turns, have patience learning the value of taking part and managing the emotions of winning and losing. Cameron is the current TYI Pool Champion!
