ACW Breed Society's Trustees Report for the year 2024-25 It is with great pleasure that we, the Trustees of the Ancient Cattle of Wales Breed Society {hereinafter ferred to as 'the Society.). present the Ancient Cattle of Wales Breed Socie5 Trustees report for the year 2024-25. Following the successful application for charitsble ststus. the focus of the Society has been on developing and delivering its objectives. These are as follows: To ralse avRreness of the existen and value of the old coloured Welsh cattle o RBST: The Trustees are pleased to report on the success of the application to the Ra Breeds Surviwal Trust. This marks a significant milestone in the development of the Society. Through pathership with the RBST a range of opportunities will now become available. Notsbly the collection of registered bull semen for storage and future availability to ACW members with breeding herds. o Events and media: The Society has undertaken and been involved in a number of public events. most notably the Royal Welsh Spring Festival. The Society stand had examples of the breed on display, with members engaging with the public across the weekend. Interviews In local and national media have tsken place, in which the breed's strengths in supporting the multifunctional landscape in which we farm. as well as its special relationship with Welsh history and culture were highlighted. o Creation of Herd Book: The Trustee5 are awa that the has not been a herd book for the ACW society since the Societws inptiOn. The Trustees believe that the reintroduction of an up to date herd book would be invaluable for members and supporters alike and would help in the promotlon of the breed. It should be noted that a kind benefactor has offered financial support to help realise this ambition. This objective will be progressed in the coming year. o Membership: We have been pleased to see a slow but steady increase in new members joining the Society. MO work needs to be done to increase memberships with an emphasis on making it easier to join. With this in mind, the Society has begun discussions on the development of an online membership form. Further discussions will take pla in the coming year 11. To conserve the cOlr varieties by registerfng approprfate cattle Grassroots on4ine registration system: The benefits of working with the Grassroots system have come to the fore this year. The Society secretsry has worked with the Chair to add animals and breeders who were missing off the system. and all the data have been cleaned and are now listed correctly. It was inwdluable for the application to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBsn, where the bloodlines could be traced for a very large number of animals. proving their heritsge and generations of breeding. The Trustees extend thelr gratitude to all on the Committee for the immense work undertaken to achieve this success. Collection of Semen: The ACW society with the full backing and support of the RBSf has identified a number of registered bulls which meet the Societys Criteria. With the permission of the bulls, owners. RBST and the Society are in the process of collecting semen for future use and to preserve bloodlines. The hope is that this will allow smaller herds to access a wider range of semen for Al and permit for a mare focused bedIng programme. Cattle numbers: The number of animals registered with the Society remains stubbornly low. The Society is tsckling this challenge by working with key breeders and owners (old and new) to develop the breeding programme. Through their cooperation we expert that these numbers will stsrt to slowly increase in the coming years. RBST will play a significant role in helping the Society to develop and progress this objedive. create a speciallst market for the ancient Catt of Wales o UK National Breed at Risk register (NBAR) listing: With the Suc$$fUl attainment of RBST status the Trustees are committed to prOgsSIng the breeds daim for N8AR ststus with DEFRA. The NBAR register is a list of UK breeds that are identified as at risk or vulnerable to extinction. In England, breeds listed on the NBAR list are eligible for supplements via the Environmentsi Land Management {ELM) schemes. Support for native breeds remains under consideration for inclusion in the Welsh Government's Sustainable Farming Scheme. ACW Breed Sodety Flnances: The financial footing of the Society has remained solid with little difference between our incomings and outgoings. The audited financial port to the date to the period ending the 19 July 2025 does show a drop in bank funds to £618.40 from £864.78. a loss of £246.38. However. it should be noted that the audit date has been brought forward to allow for sufficient scrutiny prior to the AGM, now that we are a charity. ft should be noted as of the 9 of September 2025 the ACW Society bank statement stands at £797.40. Trustees are beginning work on the development of a robust risk management process. with associated funding strategies.
