Review of the year from the chair:

Michael Hutley

Biodiversity group held a public meeting facilitated by Samantha Claydon of the Pesticide Action Network, discussing the use of glyphosates to eradicate weeds on Saltdean pavements.

We published an article on Glyphosates in the Deans Magazine.

Richard Stow put in an application to establish a community farm at the Picker's Hill farm which was eventually turned down in favour of the property being rented out to a local farmer.

A meeting was held to play Climate Fresk, a game designed to help people get a better grasp of the issues involved in Climate Change, on the 1[st] August, 2024.

We had a brainstorming session for members of the core group early in the year to help SCAN clarify it's aims and objectives and how we can achieve these. A further meeting is planned to look at the management structure.

Almut hosted two shared vegetarian lunches as part of the Food, Health & the Environment Group, with the aim of stimulating discussion on how this group might progress.

SCAN invited Kate Bradbury to do a public book launch for her book 'One Garden Against the World'. The event was very successfully received, drawing over 50 local residents.

Over the past year we have been monitoring activities around the Three Greens and discovered that yet another group of developers have purchased Plot 2 with the aim of building three houses on the land turning the rest of the area into a community space as a way of getting local residents to buy into their scheme. The upshot has been that the residents don't want any development to take place and SCAN is working with them to approach B&H Council with the support of several other environmental groups like Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Woodland Trust to, once and for all, declare the land as a Community Wildlife Preserve.

I am impressed how much we have done over the space of a year, as a small group, and this is only a part of our overall activities.

Energy Group report

Mark Earthey

This year has seen a number of notable successes for the Energy Group, and very firm foundations laid for the Group’s activities over the next few years :

We have formed strong working relationships with the local branches of national organisations such as Energise Sussex Coast , and the Brighton & Hove Energy Service Co-Operative (BHESCo) . They support us in promoting energy and sustainability awareness in Saltdean, and provide valuable resources.
Our Energy Group has a presence on Climate : Change , a city-wide environmental think-tank, and we are regular attendees at their meetings.
We have held a number of events for Saltdean residents:
- Warmer Saltdean (on insulation and heating options for Saltdean’s type of housing stock);
- Heat Pumps and Solar Panels – the truth;
- Damp Diagnosis – is cavity wall insulation right for you?;
- EcoHouse Trail;
- We have a regular stand at the Saltdean Repair Café.
We now have a good complement of ‘Energy Champions’ trained by Energise Sussex Coast, and have helped with the training of more Energy Champions in Rottingdean and Ovingdean. We always have room for more Champions – please apply!
We continue to provide input into the ‘Achieving More Sustainable Buildings’ section of the West Saltdean Neighbourhood Plan, currently being drafted by our BHCC Ward Cllrs Bridget Fishleigh and Dr Mark Earthey, together with the Saltdean Neighbourhood Forum .
Through work commissioned by Energise Sussex Coast , it is now possible to view data on Saltdean’s Carbon Footprint, and compare it with UK cities, towns and villages (including Brighton, Rottingdean, and Ovingdean). The data can be found at
https://impact tool.org.uk/ . It’s done by council ward, so enter ‘Rottingdean and West Saltdean’ or ‘East Saltdean and Telscombe Cliffs’ at the prompt as appropriate to your address.
Through BHESCo , we successfully applied for a grant to conduct a Decarbonisation Feasibility Study for Saltdean, against a scope of work outlined by ourselves. We are awaiting the release of funds amounting to around £40k. Ovingdean won the same grant earlier this year, and Rottingdean will apply for theirs later this year. We are working with our energy counterparts in both villages to draw up a co-ordinated strategy for decarbonization.
Plans are well advanced for the creation of a Community Energy Scheme spanning Saltdean, Ovingdean and Rottingdean. This is an important component of our co-ordinated Decarbonisation Strategy, and aims to provide cheaper electricity to residents from local sources. Watch this space!

Transport Group report Rob Shepherd

NB Transport-focused meeting will follow the AGM for fuller discussion of points raised here.

Transport is very important as

we can do some good
it accounts for 30% of our CO2e
some national and local guidance does more harm than good
its Global Warming Impact on critical tipping points is still largely ignored

Transport Carbon is widely misunderstood, mismanaged or misrepresented

making road vehicles already accounts for over 30% of our road transport CO2e
by 2035 it will account for over half and most of its Global Warming Impact.
yet we encourage switching to EVs irrespective of individual circumstances
and do little to discourage Air Travel, whose 20% of CO2e is not reduced by EVs
moving car journeys to walk-bike might at best save 0.2% by 2040
moving car journeys to local buses is unlikely to save any CO2e.
moving to EVs is expected to save 80% of our Transport CO2e by 2040
yet Public Transport and Active Travel are No 1 Priority to Decarbonise Transport!
pushing this absurd priority may have increased our road transport CO2e by up to 22%

We can't do much about wasteful national and local policies

We can help people make carbon friendlier acquisions (vehicles, appliances, food)

No car, washing machine or freezer is carbon friendly, but some are less unfriendly.
10 tonnes of CO2e from making a vehicle won't suddenly stop warming the planet if we scrap it, it will still be doing its annual damage in 500 years time

Bespoke and trustworthy advice on our major CO2e critical decisions is hard to find. .

There is some guidance on Carbon Footprints, but almost none on more important life-cycle carbon, Carbon Payback Time CPT and Global Warming Payback Time.GWPT. Should you just rely on the sales-person's claims or dubious politicised guidance?

Local and National Authorities need one-size-fits-all solutions that don't lose votes or undermine favoured policies, but often such solutions do not fit individual circumstances.

Can we set up an independent advisory service?

Not if we don't try. I am working on how we can use technology to support such a service, but do we have the will to tackle systemic misdirection of people's good intentions?

Food Group report

The Food group has enjoyed bring and share vegetarian lunches hosted by Almut. We are now planning for the Saltdean Community Fun Day in the park on 6 July. Two places have been booked for our tables, with the idea of the food group having their focused display and information on one and other areas of SCAN represented on the other. These are the notes from our most recent meeting.

Biodiversity Group report to SCAN AGM - 3 June 2025

Looes Barn . = Carr's Farms have not agreed access to Looe's stating need to take legal advice. Bridget has asked BHCC for clarification on the legality of the exclusive access to the farmer. The BHCC officer is on long term leave, so the issue remains unresolved. The site has been viewed from a distance and is effectively rewilding.

The Three Greens - Green Two has had a groundswell of interest in seeking BHCC to uphold the Covenant reverting the land to BHCC. They are pursuing with BHCC following unanimous support at a well attended outdoor meeting, also opposing planning permission for houses on the land, which now has a path cleared. The SCAN Biodiversity Action Plan and Three Greens Draft management plans are being used to support the case to BHCC.

Biogas Proposal - At the BHCC Carbon Zero Pathways policy launch, the absence of "nature based solutions" was raised by SCAN and taken on board by Cllrs Rowkin and Muten. This has been followed up with detailed questions and answers on the Biogas Proposal, between Richard Stow and BHCC lead Alice Berry. The dialogue will be discussed at the next briefing by Alice Berry, to Cllrs Mutn and Rowkins . Simon Maxwell of Climate:Change has proposed a round table meeting of potential key consortium business members. which may now follow.
