Report of the Trustees For the year ended 31 March 2025

The Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements for the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2025. The Trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

Haringey Circle Report of the Trustees Continued For the year ended 31 March 2025

Chair's report

The Charity's Object is to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by working with people over the age of 50/or disabled people in the Area of Benefit who are socially excluded by combatting loneliness and social isolation arising as a result of their age, infirmity, ill-health, disability or social circumstance, in particular but not exclusively by the provision of:

1.1 social and recreational facilities and events.

1.2 advice, support and information which is capable of reducing their social isolation.

For the purpose of this clause ‘socially excluded' means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one or more of the following factors: unemployment, financial hardship, youth or old age; and ill health (physical or mental).

Haringey Circle was registered as a charity on 22nd March 2024 having previously been a Community Interest Company since September 2020. This is Circle's first Annual Report and Accounts in accordance with the Charities Statement of Operational Practice. The transition from CIC to a Charity has involved the development of a new business model based on free membership and a greater dependency on income from grants, sponsorship and donations.

The year 2024/25 has been financially challenging, involving reductions in relation to staffing hours and office costs. We reduced the hours of the Manager and Social Activities Organiser in January 2025 and moved out of our office in February 2025 to work remotely. In hindsight the decision to work remotely has worked well as the members’ social activities and events are delivered in community facilities across Haringey and outside in parks and local nature reserves. Activities are advertised and promoted in the Circle monthly Newsletter, which is our primary means of communication with members, partners and stakeholders. Members’ details are held securely on our CRM database, which also records engagement in activities and can generate reports and surveys.

Despite the challenges there were two successful bids for grant funding during the year. We received a grant of £19k in June from the National Lottery for our Older Voices bid to support our manager to develop partnerships with other local organisations who worked with older and disabled people in Haringey. We submitted a bid in July to the ADOBE foundation in partnership with Disability Action Haringey (DAH) to reduce social isolation and loneliness experienced by disabled people in Haringey through engagement in social activities and in September DAH was awarded £40k over two years. This funding supports our Social Activity Organiser and covers the costs of sessional workers; room hire and materials. We were very fortunate to secure a donation of £5k in March which, with Gift Aid, contributed £6,250 to our income.

A priority this year has been to plan and develop new social activities in response to the interests of our members; the level of activity has built up over the year, peaking in the last three months. Planning has involved identifying members’ interests, recruiting sessional workers and volunteers to lead activities and finding community locations with reasonable room hire rates. One of our early activities was Sunday and bank holiday walks over Christmas and New Year to provide members living alone to have social contact over this period. This was very successful and has led to weekly walks being a regular activity, usually ending in a local cafe for a chat over a cup of tea and cake. Line Dancing has proved to be very popular with members and has developed into two classes - beginners and intermediate. Chair exercise classes were popular with members who had restricted mobility. A quiz night in partnership with Rochdale Circle has been a regular activity, extending to two nights and Spanish classes on Zoom have been popular. Members also participated in knitting / craft classes, Dominoes and Whist sessions.

Haringey Circle Report of the Trustees Continued For the year ended 31 March 2025

Circle membership doubled over the year, growing to c.500 members in March 2025, suggesting that there is a demand for the Circle offer. Measuring the impact of the Circle interventions is not straightforward but we made a start by using the nationally recognised UCLA Loneliness Scale to survey our members. The objective was to establish a baseline against which the Circle intervention could be evaluated. The Survey is continuing into the first few months of 2025/26 with a view to producing a Report on the findings in July. Initial findings from December to March are that 50% of Circle members identify as being lonely using the UCLA criteria. Another measure of impact is feedback from members’ testimonials on what difference Circle has made to them. In early May 2025 we asked members for feedback on their Circle experience and the responses were overwhelmingly positive:

It's given me an opportunity to meet others in the area - otherwise I sit at home not talking to anyone for days. John (92)

I have a disability and often feel isolated, but I've joined groups and don’t feel very welcome. However, with Haringey Circle I always feel welcome and my needs are discussed quite openly, and everyone joins in in a lovely way. Jo

I just wanted to say how much I’ve loved becoming part of Haringey Circle over the past few months. I joined in September last year when I had started to feel quite isolated because several of my friends had moved out of London and others family situations had changed. I started to feel lonely for the first time in my life. I've also had my own stresses since the new year which means I haven't been able to work. I genuinely believe that the activities offered by Haringey Circle have helped me through this time, both physically and mentally. And for the first time I’ve been making new friends and I’m starting to feel more a part of my local community which I’m loving! Thank you to the whole team. You are a really committed group of people who I believe are doing an amazing job. Gisela

Circle's Board of eight Trustees brings a range of expertise and local knowledge and are representative of the membership, all being age 60+ and two with disabilities. Three members joined during the year - Anne Gray, Andrew Carpenter and Mike Wilson. Anne is also a board member of the Haringey Over 50s, and Andrew is on the board of Disability Action Haringey. Trustees are appointed by the Board and have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. Board members have had an introduction to Finance and Management Accounts to enable them to better understand the financial monitoring reports presented to their monthly meetings. The Trustees receive regular financial reports and cashflow projections to ensure that Circle's costs and income are under continual review.

Although the Annual Report looks back on the year, we are also looking forward to the year ahead with the opportunities and challenges this will bring. At the time of writing, we have secured two grants of £10k each which, together with the ADOBE grant funding, will be sufficient to sustain our current, higher level of activity over the next twelve months. New activities are planned, and resources include ceramics, art classes, creative writing, and a pinhole photography workshop. On the current trajectory we will have c. 700 members by March 2026 enjoying inclusive social activities and having “The time of their lives.”

Reserves policy

Haringey Circle aims to maintain unrestricted free reserves equivalent to 3 months’ running costs. Due to the recent inception of the Charity, unrestricted funding has been slow and as a result has an unrestricted free reserve deficit and has therefore not met its unrestricted free reserves policy.

Going Concern

We have been successful in obtaining unrestricted funding in 25/26 and working towards meeting the 3 months of running costs

Haringey Circle Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees For the year ended 31 March 2025

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charitable company for the year ended 31 March 2025.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity Trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').

Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiners statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair view' which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or

  4. the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
