Report to The Charities Commission, from
the Board of Trustees and Directors of
The Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions 19 September 2023 – 30 September 2024
The Company “Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions” was consolidated as a Company (no. 15147496) on 19 September 2023 and registered as a Charity (no. 1207517), later in March 2024, with the Company Directors/Board of Trustees, being one and the same:
Jonathan Heelas Barritt Sarah-Jane Bradley Louise Lansdown Martin Bernard Outram Peter Wynne Rees
A website for the Company/Charity Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions - Tertis and Aronowitz International Viola Competitions was begun in September 2023 where both Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition (LTIVC) and Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition (CAIVC) were advertised and due to take place in January 2025 at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead.
Both competitions invited competitors from around the globe; LTIVC for violists aged 19-30 and CAIVC for violists aged up to and including 18 years. Competition rules and application regulation for entrants appeared on the Website along with repertoire information and guidance.
The Company set up a bank account with Lloyds Bank, with a generous donation from The Tertis Foundation, using some of the original legacy from Lionel Tertis. The company became a charity on 19 March 2024.
The company sent out a press release; information to the media and worldwide musical institutions and conservatoires to advertise the competitions; paid advertisement was also made via The Strad and The Violin Channel, as well as the company’s own Social Media channels on Facebook and Instagram.
The closing date for entrants for both competitions was Friday 10 May 2024. 128 applications were received for LTIVC, while applications for CAIVC were less, so a board meeting was called and it was decided to extend the deadline for CAIVC to 1 July 2024 and a total of 27 applications were received.
Applications were received from every continent of the world – this included an electronic form and a link to a YouTube preliminary round performance. These performances were juried by an initial panel during June and July 2024 and competitors were subsequently invited to attend the live competition. There were reserve lists of applicants, should any drop out.
The charity applied to the Arts Council England for a grant to support the competitions and festival, which was submitted in June 2024. In early September it was deemed that the bid submitted for £83k had been unsuccessful.
The company/charity commissioned two brand new solo viola pieces for performance at the competitions – one for each – from Garth Knox and Kathy Tagg. These were made available to the competitors at the beginning of August 2024 to the successful applicants.
In the meantime, all the arrangements were being made not only for the competitions themselves, but also for the extra elements to complement the competitions: celebrity concerts, masterclasses, group workshops, and a luthier/bowmakers and trade exhibition. Two jury panels were engaged and 5 professional pianists, 3 professional singers, along with their travel arrangements, accommodation and subsistence.
Communication with The Glasshouse involved detailed planning and scheduling; by the end of September 2024 all arrangements for the competitions and associated festival were in full flow.
