SHEFFIELD FOOD CHAIN
TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE PERIOD
From 30 November 2023 to 30 September 2024
1 OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
1.1 Objects
The object of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation for the public benefit is the prevention or relief of poverty in Sheffield by the preparation and delivery of healthy frozen meals to individuals in need and/or charities or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.
1.2 Activities
Sheffield Food Chain is a charity with a mission to nourish and support the community, delivering regular packages of meals made from food surplus to individuals and families affected by food poverty.
We cook nutritious vegetarian and vegan meals using food waste donated to us by local traders Beanies and Le Crunch. Every meal is prepared and cooked from scratch by a team of volunteers, then packed and frozen, ready to be delivered.
All our deliveries, from collecting food surplus, to delivering frozen meals to homes, are made by our team of volunteer cyclists. Using e-cargo bikes, we are able to deliver far and wide across Sheffield.
We believe everyone should have access to nutritious, sustainable food. We work closely with local charities to serve members of the community affected by food poverty, many of whom can’t access other services because of caring responsibilities or disability. We aim to deliver five frozen meals per home on a weekly basis across areas including Sharrow, Highfield, Broomhall and Nether Edge with occasional emergency deliveries outside this area.
1.3 Public benefit
We refer to the Charity Commission guidance on Public Benefit when planning and carrying out our activities.
1.4 Volunteers
All our activities are carried out by volunteers. We currently have 53 members on our WhatsApp group, including the trustees who are all actively involved. We are, however, in need of more volunteers: recruitment will be one of the areas the trustees will focus on in the immediate future.
2 ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
2.1 Operations
We delivered meals every Tuesday during our first year of operation, including Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Delivery numbers varied from 60 to 110 meals each week and we managed to match this with the number of meals produced in the kitchen.
We cooked on almost every Tuesday with occasional Thursday sessions when additional stock was required.
2.2 Fundraising
Our initial funding came from Food Hall’s Food Delivery Project (£1,480). We also inherited their kitchen equipment and our cargo bike.
Our fundraising activities in our first year produced the following results:-
| Private donations | £5,537 |
|---|---|
| Graves Trust | £500 (for new freezer) |
| Sheffield Town Trust | £750 |
3 FINANCIAL REVIEW
- 3.1 Financial position at the end of our financial year, 30 September 2024
See attached summary of income and expenditure.
3.2 Reserves
| Reserves | |
|---|---|
| Restricted reserves | £2,398 |
| Unrestricted reserves | £33 |

3.3 Financial risks
Our activities are relatively low risk in financial terms but are dependent on external funding. While the Awards for All grant we received in October 2024 secured our main financial needs for a two year period, we need to maintain other income streams to cover activities outside the scope of this funding.
