The main activity has been to maintain a
Facebook community of people who use
the Rec, The page has been usedto
publicise local events and services, including
consultations by the Council and the police,
find lost pets and children’s toys, connect with
others to play tennis and football.
Volunteers also took part in litter picking on
four occasions, removing over two skips of
rubbish and 3,000 aluminium cans. Planting
activities included 3 traditional trees, 450
mixed bulbs, ornamental grasses and flowering
plants.
The other activity for the year was securing
£80,000 from the Civic Pride fund to improve
the footpath on one side of the Rec, making a
better surface for pushchairs and bicycles, and
to make a new path from Green Lane through
the copse into the Rec.
The Friends have also started consulting with
park users about the development of the old
putting green area into a community garden.
Advocacy with the Council and contractors
resulted in the restoration of a hedge for local
residents next to the park, and the installation
of a new rubbish bin, as well as the removal of
approximately 15 skips of fly tipping from The
Spinney.
