won71capswithEnglandbetween1996and2011,and2fortheBritishandIrishLionswithwhom he
touredthreetimes.SimonisoneofthefoundersofLoveoftheGame,drivenbyhisownexperiences of
head injuries during his playing career.
Michelle Wells (Michelle Elkins) MBE - appointed 10.12.24
Michelleisacommunicationsexpertwhohasledandsupportedthecommunicationsportfolio across
manysectors,includingthemainstreammedia,lawenforcement,counter-terrorism,localand central
Government(bothintheUKandabroad),thecharitysector,securityindustryandintheprivate sector.
MichellejoinedLOTGasitsCommunicationsAdvisorandbecameaTrusteeinDecember2024.She was
awardedanMBEintheNewYear'sHonoursList2025forservicestocharity,particularlythe prevention

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

LoveoftheGamestartedasacampaignin2021withtheoverallaimofreducing concussion-related
issuesarisingfromcontactandnon-contactsports.On23March2023LOTGbecamea Charitable
Incorporated Organisation, registered with the Charity Commission (No 1202462, CIO No CE031792).
LOTGisanimpassionedcommunityofathletes,players,fans,innovatorsandexperts,unitedbyour love
ofsportandthedesireto,notonlyprotectplayersofallagesfromthepotentiallydevastatingimpact of
headinjuries,butalsotoprotecttheintegrityofthesportsweknowandlove.LoveoftheGameaims to
preserveoursportsbyreducingtheriskofearlyonsetdementiaandotherneurologicalconsequences to
players, lengthening sporting careers and reducing the fear of taking part.  Our mission statement is:
Toprotectplayersofallagesfromthepotentiallydevastatingimpactofheadinjuries,while also
protecting the integrity of the sports we know and love.
LoveoftheGame(LOTG)wasfoundedbyformerEnglandandBritishandIrishLionsrugby union
internationalSimonShawMBE,businessman,dementiacarepioneer,andformerEngland Under-18
playerLaurenceGellerCBE,andSallyPettipher,ChiefofStafftoformerinternationalrugbycaptain and
ownerofCornishPirates,SirRichardEvans(andnowCEOofCornishPirates).LaurenceGeller was
subsequentlyappointedtheUKGovernment'sMinisterialAdvisoronConcussioninSportandchaired the
Government's Innovation and Technology Forum for Concussion in Sport.
The objects of LOTG as a CIO are as follows:
Forthepublicbenefittheprotectionandpreservationofgoodhealth,inparticular,butnot exclusively,
by:
A.Fundingandprovidingsupportforresearchintotheefficacyofapproachesusedtoprevent, mitigate
andmanageconcussion-relatedinjuriesincludingbutnotlimitedtopersistentconcussionsyndrome and
earlyonsetdementiainEnglandandWalesandresearchintonewmedicaltechnologiesand treatments
ofconcussion-relatedinjuriesprovidedthattheusefulresultsofsuchresearcharedisseminatedto the
public at large.
B.Educatingmedicalpractitionersandotherprofessionalsinthebestmethodsforthediagnosis,care and
treatment of persons with concussion-related injuries.
C.Educatingaboutandpromotingaccessibilitytotreatmentwithincentresprovidingcareand treatment
to persons with concussion-related injuries.
D. Raising awareness among the general public of all areas of concussion-related injuries.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

Charitable activities

LOTGtakesasolutions-basedapproachtotheproblembyworkingwithathletes, technologists,
academicsandthebusinessandfinancialcommunitiestodevelopnewtechnologiesthatwill prevent,
diagnoseandtreatheadinjuriesinsport.Likemostsports,successistheproductofawhole team.
Solvingthiscrisisisnodifferent.Wehavebroughttogetherauniquenetworkofover600 supporters
representingtheUK'smajorsports,government,academia,technology,scienceandbusiness.We have
forgednewandproductiverelationshipswithmajorandgrass-rootssportingclubs,research institutes,
charitable organisations and major governing sports bodies.
Ratherthanfocusingonthechallengesofthepast,LOTG'saimistoprotecttheplayersofthefuture and
ensurethatfutureathletesareprotectedfromlongtermhealthrisksthatyesterday'sandtoday's players
havehadtoaccept.InordertoachievethisandfulfiltheobjectsoftheCIO,LOTGpromotes a
solutions-based approach across a series of pillars:

Education

- Improving recognition of the symptoms of concussion
-Positioningthelong-termprotectionoftheheadandbrainaspartofaplayer'strainingregimen and
routine
Diagnosis
- Promoting more coherent sharing of information to aid in the identification of diagnosis tools
-Developingamoresophisticatedmethodofidentifyingthesymptomsandsignsofconcussionat the
point of impact and for the use of proven bio-markers over the course of a player's career
-Creatingimpactassessmentwearablesandbigdataanalysistograderiskandseverityof concussion
and the proper course of action needed

Treatment & prevention

Promotingmulti-disciplinarycollaboration(bringingtogetherinvestors,inventors,researchers, clinicians
and sports experts) to accelerate product development, experimentation and implementation.
Concussion Prevention
InApril2024,LOTGheldandfundedoursecondannualUKConcussionPreventionNetworkconference, in
London, in partnership with the University of Bath and Calgary University.
ThismarkedthecreationofanewUKConcussionPreventionNetwork.ASteeringGroupandan Advisory
Grouphavebeensetuptodelivertheaimsofthenetworkandprovidegovernanceand communication
with key stakeholder organisations.
Creating a national network of dedicated sports concussion care
In2022LOTGbegantodrawtogetheranetworkofleadingneurosurgeons, neurologists,
neuro-psychologistsandradiographersfromaround20leadinghospitalsandcentres.Itwas originally
calledtheRegionalSportsConcussionCentresNetworkbutwasrenamedtheUKConcussion Network
(UKCN).Itisco-chairedbyProfessorPeterHutchinsonfromCambridgeandProfessorMichael Parker
fromLOTG.LOTGisfinanciallysupportingtheadministrationofthenetwork.Thenetworkhas been
invaluablein,interalia,providingadvicetoLOTG'sthen-ChairmanLaurenceGellerandto government
whichhelpedthemtocraftthenationalguidelinesforconcussionmanagementacrossall grassroot
sports. These guidelines were published in April 2023 by DCMS, entitled 'If in doubt, sit them out'.

Creating an integrated national approach to concussion in sport

Duringtheperiodoftheannualreport,LOTGworkedcloselywithGovernment,mainlythrough its
Chairman,LaurenceGeller,todefineanintegratedapproachtoConcussioninSports,linking multiple
governmentdepartments,theRSCCs,researchandtechnologycommitteesandworkonPrevention and
Concussion Management guidelines.

Charitable activities

LOTGhasbeeninvolvedinshowcasingnewtechnologiessinceitscreation,startingwitha'Hackathon' in
March2021whichsawteamsofstudents,researchers,designersandmedicsfromthetopuniversities in
theUKformedtodesignnewtechnologiestoprevent,diagnoseortreatconcussioninsport. Media
interestledtoanongoingLOTGfocusonprovidingplatformsfornewtechnologiesintheformof annual
'DemoDays'.Someofthesehaveshownparticularpromise.WecontinuetoworkwithWAVi,an early
DemoDayparticipant,whoseportablebrainscannerhasrecentlyreceivedFDAapprovalintheUSA and
thefinalyearofresearchandpublicationisunderway.LOTGsupportforWAVihasinvolvedfunding three
machineswhichhavebeendeployedintestingatthreerugbyclubsinEngland.AnotherDemo Day
product,PolarCap,aportablecoolingsystemintendedtoreduceexercise-inducedelevated brain
temperaturetopreventorlimitlongtermcognitiveimpairmentafterbraintrauma,isnowbeingused by
professional teams in ice hockey, football, Rugby Union and Rugby League in multiple countries.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Reserves policy

DuringtheaccountingperiodLOTGhadnoreserves.However,thecurrentTrusteesofLOTGhave now
setupareservefundcomprising10%ofallfuturedonationsorcontributionsfromfund-raisingevents, to
ensuretheorganisationisabletocoverthecostofanyfutureobligations,includingtherepaymentof any
existing or future loans.

Principal funding sources

TheAccountsforthefinancialyears2023-2024areattachedtothisreport.Keyfiguresareincome of
£59,008 and expenditure of £58,632.
£25,000ofworkingcapitalwasintheformofagenerousinterestfreeloanfromLaurenceGeller which
hasbeenadvancedforaperiodof5yearsfrom3May2023.Muchoftheremainingincomederives from
fund-raisingactivitiesatDemoDaysandotherevents,throughindividualdonationsorproceeds of
charityauctions.Thisincomeisthendirectedtowardsfundingindividualtechnologyprojects as
mentioned or the running costs of LOTG.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Lookingaheadto2025,LOTGaimstofocusonfundingeducationprogrammesincludingbyproviding free
digitaltoolstoenablefasterandmorereliablepitchsidediagnosisandrecommendationsfor treatment,
particularlyforgrassrootssport.Wealsoaimtobuildonoursuccessinshowcasing emerging
technologiesanddemonstratethemtointerestedaudiencesthroughourDemoDays.Themostrecent of
thesewasinOctober2024showcasing'BrainEye','ConcussionToolkit'and'Abbott'.Thiswasour second
fundraisingeventatHollandandHollandanditwasagaingenerouslysupportedbyUnispace(who have
committedtocontinuetheirsupportinto2025).Itwastargetedataselectedaudiencetohelp fund
supportforthetechcompanieswhoexhibited.WeintendtoholdournextDemoDayinthefirsthalf of
2025.

Accounting convention
