ofsportandthedesireto,notonlyprotectplayersofallagesfromthepotentiallydevastatingimpact of

preserveoursportsbyreducingtheriskofearlyonsetdementiaandotherneurologicalconsequences to
players, lengthening sporting careers and reducing the fear of taking part.  Our mission statement is:

In2022LOTGbegantodrawtogetheranetworkofleadingneurosurgeons, neurologists,
neuro-psychologistsandradiographersfromaround20leadinghospitalsandcentres.Itwas originally
calledtheRegionalSportsConcussionCentresNetworkbutwasrenamedtheUKConcussion Network
(UKCN).Itisco-chairedbyProfessorPeterHutchinsonfromCambridgeandProfessorMichael Parker
fromLOTG.LOTGisfinanciallysupportingtheadministrationofthenetwork.Thenetworkhas been
invaluablein,interalia,providingadvicetoLOTG'sthen-ChairmanLaurenceGellerandto government
whichhelpedthemtocraftthenationalguidelinesforconcussionmanagementacrossall grassroot
sports. These guidelines were published in April 2023 by DCMS, entitled 'If in doubt, sit them out'.

March2021whichsawteamsofstudents,researchers,designersandmedicsfromthetopuniversities in
theUKformedtodesignnewtechnologiestoprevent,diagnoseortreatconcussioninsport. Media
interestledtoanongoingLOTGfocusonprovidingplatformsfornewtechnologiesintheformof annual
'DemoDays'.Someofthesehaveshownparticularpromise.WecontinuetoworkwithWAVi,an early
DemoDayparticipant,whoseportablebrainscannerhasrecentlyreceivedFDAapprovalintheUSA and
thefinalyearofresearchandpublicationisunderway.LOTGsupportforWAVihasinvolvedfunding three
machineswhichhavebeendeployedintestingatthreerugbyclubsinEngland.AnotherDemo Day
product,PolarCap,aportablecoolingsystemintendedtoreduceexercise-inducedelevated brain
temperaturetopreventorlimitlongtermcognitiveimpairmentafterbraintrauma,isnowbeingused by
professional teams in ice hockey, football, Rugby Union and Rugby League in multiple countries.
