The provision of a community orchard for the benefit of the inhabitants and visitors to Clanfield, Oxfordshire and the surrounding area, promoting the preservation of heritage fruit trees, advancing environmental protection and improvement of the natural environment.

To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Clanfield and the surrounding area the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants .

- This year saw the charity registered in February 2023. In July a thirty-year lease was signed by the trustees on a half-acre site in the heart of the village with

the purpose of creating a community orchard for the benefit of the inhabitants and visitors to Clanfield.
- Forty seven heritage fruit trees and a harvest hedge were planted in November/December with the purpose of promoting the preservation of heritage fruit trees, advancing environmental protection and improvement of the natural environment.
Achievements and Performance

The main achievements of the charity in the period were:

Securing donations and grants to cover the essential set up costs for year 1.

Construction of a wooden pedestrian footbridge over the dry ditch to provide accessible access to the community orchard. Construction of perimeter fencing.

Sourcing 47 locally and nationally important heritage fruit trees.

Securing a donation from the Woodland Trust of harvest hedge plants to provide a hedge for foraging and haven for wildlife.

Establishing a core group of volunteers for working parties to prepare the site for planting and subsequent maintenance.

Hosting 2 community planting days in November/December to plant 47 heritage fruit trees and a harvest hedge. More than 50 volunteers from the community turned out to join in planting and show support for the community resource.

- Arranging an away day at Hinksey Hill Woods for volunteers to learn how to coppice and manage the existing hazel at the Community Orchard.
Financial Review
Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period
At the end of the first year the charity is in a good financial position. The set-up costs have been met by the generous support of local village residents, grants and donations from local businesses. The charity is continuing to spend from grants and donations and has reserves to meet its obligations for 2024.

The Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment (TOE) with funding from Grundon Waste Management Ltd through the Landfill Communities Fund
