Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The objects of the CIO are to advance the
education and prospects of:
i) UK school students from all financial
backgrounds, through the
provision by volunteers of online, pay-as-
you-feel tutoring services that
enable them to recognise their full potential
capabilities, competencies
and skills.
ii) Young people for the public benefit, by
making grants to educational
charities using the proceeds from tutoring
services.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17
and 1.19
We offer tuition on a discounted basis (pay-
as-you-feel donations with a suggested
minimum of £10/class), in a range of UK
GCSE and A-Level subjects, principally
English, Maths and Sciences. The surplus
from donations received is utilised to make a
grant each year to an educational charity
(selected by application process followed by
shortlisting and a vote, in which all
volunteers can participate).
The charity offers subjects based on the
subject choices of available tutoring
volunteers, which are based on their
qualifications. Each tutor teaches a subject
in which they have a qualification at least
one level above that which they are tutoring,
with grade B or above (e.g. a Maths GCSE
tutor must have Maths A-Level). Alternative,
equivalent qualifications or experience are
considered in the tutor selection process on

representing our surplus from class

as Bath (through the Gold Scholars’
programme) and the Global Banking
School, recruiting new tutoring
volunteers to support class delivery.
● Took on a new Volunteer Coordinator
(on a voluntary basis) to lead the
management team and streamline
recruitment, training and pairing
processes.
● Continued to receive positive
feedback from service users, e.g.

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 At the end of the reported financial period
Learning by Heart had £154 of reserves and
no outstanding debts.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
statingwhytheyare held
Para 1.22 Learning by Heart has a policy to retain at
least three months of run-rate costs as a
reserve.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £154
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 n/a
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 n/a
Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 The amount of reserves remaining at the
end of FY24/25 is slightly lower than what
would typically be kept for three months of
run-rate costs. With this in mind, we paused
charity donations for the year FY25/26 to
ensure we have ample reserves to keep
running the service, and have also
undertaken a review of key expenditure.
With these actions completed, there are no
concerns regarding the charity continuing.
