Thls is thefirst report of Thewestmrland Orchestra CIO, reg No. 1201505, following the smooth transition from registered charity No. 502339. Open Summer Sessions have become a regular and popular fixture since they marked th# retum to playing after lockdown in 2021. They provide an opportunity for members and Buests- would-be members, youngsters and holldaymakersl- to play in a relaxed atmosphe for the pure enioymentof music-makin& In 2023 we had four sesslon5. two condurted by Martln Budgett and two by Melvin Tay- they were on our shortltst to be OUT new Music Director and Conductor, a decislon deferred as both were booked as 8uestcondurtor5. Our September Come and Play Daywas terrifical weii-attendedwith players traveiling trom m"arhestef and Blrmingham to tackleVau8han Williams, London Symphony. The Autumn term saw Melwn Taywork the orchestra hard as we mastered the crary rhy(hmsof "Scary FaSry sav Chrlstmas°_ (think Pèter and the Wolf meets Rumpelsts'ltskinll The fairytale theme of the concert cont*nued with The Flreblrd and Skeping Beautysuites. There was great interest In the concert and plwr5 were exeited but was not to be. A malor krident was declared in Cumbrla the nlBht bdore the concert as a weather bomb deposlted snow on Kendal and there wa5 no option but to cancel the concerL Tickets were refunded but Costs were covered by a Brant and an insurance claim. In June we returned to Kendal Parish Church., after the reception last yeas¢0nCert (featuring RachmaninofPs 2[ piano concerto} received we thought we should return and make use of the organ. Andy then k)Ined the orchestra for Saint-saens magnificent Symphony No.3. The church trembled with the opening chord of the Mae5togo and at the end of the piece the orchèstr8 was greeted with a standing ovation... Feedback from the audiencewaswonderful to hear and rÈad... The Westmodand Orchestra CIO was re8i5teied gn Sjanuary 2023 in orderto over the assets and operations of The Westmodand Orchestra Ire&'stered number 5023391, the predecessor charity. The new constltution reflects as closely a5 possible the Constitution of the predece550r, urhincorporated assoclatton. The members of the Orchestra pay a membershlp 5ubseription attd are eliglbleto vote at General Meetings of the Orchestra. Almost all members alsopla¥ in the Orchestra. Trustees The Westmorland Orchestra 15 govemed by a committee dected bythe Orchestra Membership from arnongst thelr number. The ConstItuOn require5 that there be at least three Trustee& The rornmittee rneets several times ln each term, at the discretion of the members, In order to managethe rchestra. In accordance wlth thè Constitution a Chair is appointed who wlll chalr meefjn&% of the Committee and of the Membership. Concerts have traditionally been held at Kendal Leisure Centre and more ¢xcaslonally at Kendal Parish (hurth. The serwce provided by the Lèisure Centre has de¢lined but the cost has increased,. in the short term more concerts are likely to be at the church.
