PUBLIC BENEFIT

The Orchestra serves the public in generally. but in practlce those who live in or near Kendal. It provid

CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES
Sumrner, Snow a new MD and another hit in the church...
Thls is thefirst report of Thewestmrland Orchestra CIO, reg No. 1201505, following the smooth transition
from registered charity No. 502339. The old bank accounts will be c105ed aftertransfer of all funds to the new
account has been completed.
Open Summer Sessions have become a regular and popular fixture since they marked th# retum to playing after
lockdown in 2021. They provide an opportunity for members and Buests- would-be members, youngsters and
holldaymakersl- to play in a relaxed atmosphe￿ for the pure enioymentof music-makin& In 2023 we had four
sesslon5. two condurted by Martln Budgett and two by Melvin Tay- they were on our shortltst to be OUT new
Music Director and Conductor, a decislon deferred as both were booked as 8uestcondurtor5. Our September
Come and Play Daywas terrifical￿ weii-attendedwith players traveiling trom m"ar￿hestef and Blrmingham to
tackleVau8han Williams, London Symphony.
The Autumn term saw Melwn Taywork the orchestra hard as we mastered the crary rhy(hmsof "Scary FaSry
sav￿ Chrlstmas°_ (think Pèter and the Wolf meets Rumpelsts'ltskinll The fairytale theme of the concert
cont*nued with The Flreblrd and Skeping Beautysuites. There was great interest In the concert and plwr5 were
exeited but was not to be. A malor kr￿ident was declared in Cumbrla the nlBht bdore the concert as a weather
bomb deposlted snow on Kendal and there wa5 no option but to cancel the concerL Tickets were refunded but
Costs were covered by a Brant and an insurance claim.
After canvasslt)g the orchestra, the preferred Candidate for MD lalthough most members would have been
happy wlth eStherl was Melvin- and he was delighted to accept the posiyon.

cOn￿rt couldn't go ahead thwe was a certain anxiety... but It was third time luckyl Our March concert featured
thè wonderful Angèla Barnes playlng Richard Strauss 2 horn Concerto- also on thè programmè was Berlioz,
King Lear Overture and a well rehearsed and movin8 performance ofvaughan Willlams. London Syrnphony
closed the concert. It w85 lovelyto see a number of our patron5 and friendsjolned by Kendal'5 Mwr, juli4
Dunlop4 aftor the GO￿•r￿ mootingour mombors asw411 as Angela and Melvin.
In June we returned to Kendal Parish Church., after the reception last yea￿s¢0nCert (featuring RachmaninofPs
2[￿ piano concerto} received we thought we should return and make use of the organ. The concert opened

with Wagner's Prelude and Leibestod- a beautiful piece of musSc played supertJly- many members of the
audlence wore mavod to toars- then Grieg's Norww'an Danc0& Kendal is blessed with a very fino organist in
Arhdy Plowman and he opened the second hatt playing the first movement of Widor's 5 Symphony. Andy then
k)Ined the orchestra for Saint-saens magnificent Symphony No.3. The church trembled with the opening chord
of the Mae5togo and at the end of the piece the orchèstr8 was greeted with a standing ovation... Feedback from
the audiencewaswonderful to hear and rÈad...

from the ievlew:"Ambitious programme p12nnlng seems to be a feature of the Westrnodand Orchestra's

follows the°Associatt"on modèl" af the Charity Commission.
The Westmodand Orchestra CIO was re8i5teied gn Sjanuary 2023 in orderto over the assets and
operations of The Westmodand Orchestra Ire&'stered number 5023391, the predecessor charity. The new
constltution reflects as closely a5 possible the Constitution of the predece550r, urhincorporated assoclatton.
The members of the Orchestra pay a membershlp 5ubseription attd are eliglbleto vote at General Meetings of
the Orchestra. Almost all members alsopla¥ in the Orchestra.
Trustees
The Westmorland Orchestra 15 govemed by a committee dected bythe Orchestra Membership from arnongst
thelr number. The ConstItu￿On require5 that there be at least three Trustee&
The rornmittee rneets several times ln each term, at the discretion of the members, In order to managethe
rchestra.
In accordance wlth thè Constitution a Chair is appointed who wlll chalr meefjn&% of the Committee and of the
Membership. In accordance with the established practlce ofthe Westmorland Orchestra, the Chair also co-
ordinates the runnin8of the Oichè5tra.

The Westmodand Orchestra is a member of MakinB Mu55c, an organisation which Thelps leisure-time music to
ftourt5h'. The ￿rnM￿tee great￿ appreclate5 guldance from Making Musrc on consts'tuttbnalandadmlnlstratfve
matter5. Durin8 thi5 year the website and the new°platfomi' ha5 been developed and claim5 been
made on our insurance.
The Orchestra rehearses at Castle Streetcommunity Centre irn Kendal. The Centre Manager is aFways SUPkY)rtive
and accommodates la5t-minute change5 of plan and extra requirements whenever po5S4ble.
Concerts have traditionally been held at Kendal Leisure Centre and more ¢xcaslonally at Kendal Parish (hurth.
The serwce provided by the Lèisure Centre has de¢lined but the cost has increased,. in the short term more
concerts are likely to be at the church.

RISK ASSESSMENT
The Committee has considered the mak)r risks to which the charity bs exposed and sought tt) addre55 them. This
is done by keepin4pollcies up to date (led bythe Honorary Secretsryl and malntalnin4 insurance cover.
Followin8the experi**ès of Wlnter 2023-24, the Committee has decided to increase the level of insurance
cover.
The 8rowth in membership and successful grant appllcattons have S￿ngthened the financlal w$6￿ofi of the
charity and Reserves are healthv.
Changes to cla&si¢al musk provi&on acros5 Cumbria are bein8 monitored. Lakeland Sinfonia are working less
closelywith Northern Sinfonia, who are now being promoted by Better {Kendal Leisure Centremie Sands) and
prOfesS￿nal orchestras are dolng outreach work in thecounty.

The Commlttee intends to retrln a prudent level of funds In the bank such as will enable the Orchestra to
contlnue for some tlme Sn the ￿ent of a cessation of income or sudden eKpen5e. The importance of adequatè
insurance has been denM)nstrated during the year, but growth In costs continues to require wgtlance.
The Summerof 2023 saw the third and most successful series of Open Playir*g Sessions, realising a small
financial SUTpIu5 and 5trengtheninB the orchestra a5 new members were recruited.

hlghest fr8ures, at £8,755. Total from Ticket Sales, £6,803, related to only tsvo concerts following the last minute
cancenats'on of the Christmas concert. The Insurance clalm forthat concerL it adaed toricket Sales, restores the
balance to being slighdy in favoyrgf Ticket Sales.
Incorne from Grants is now a very slgnlfi¢ant part of the total for the ￿ar and encourage5 the Orchestra to
continue seeking more ways to extend the repertoire and the audience. further adYdncin8 the Objects of the

The We5trnorland Orchestra appointed a new mu￿¢31 Dirertor, Melvin Tay, at the beglnninq of the season. The
Committee and the MD have begun to discuss ideas for possible changes, each time referring to the wider
membership to 'sens&test° thelr suggesrions.
The 2024ns 5e350n wlii continue with our tradthonal strurture of three concerts vilth tèn week'ly rehear5alsfor
each. Brin&ng two major piece5 back from the concert-which-never-was ha5 allowed an ambltlous approach to
the PfD8ramme for the year.
From a Sound financial footing we ale able to brinB in more"section41' rehearsals, facilitattngconcentratlon o
detailed Corne￿ of challenging works. Thi5 also allows the Orchestra to Con￿nUe to programme larger works
requirin8 professional "Extras. forthe concerts.
The old thartywill soon be closed and funds sdll held there transferred to the CIO.
