Georges Tamer, and Kata Moser) offered remarks and feedback on the scope of the projc¢i. As part of the research stream on the Geography and History of the Wesl (Geography and Geopolitics) Profebsor Laurence Hemming gave several preliminary papers in London and Tbilisi ith January 2024 in preparation for a projeet with Dr Lasha Kharazi in G¢grgia. In th¢ laic summer of 2024 Laurence Hemming was ini'ited to become a Board Member of the Charles Malik Institule and swke at an inaugural conf¢r¢n¢¢ in Washington DC on the question of the hisiory and ¢ritique of Ori¢ntalism. The Foundation has also continued io support Tesearch on TeclmocTacy and Modernity and in 2024 Laurence Hemming began supetvising a non-UK PhD SDJdeni at th¢ Uni¥'¢rsity of tAn¢asier working in this area. Other initiatives in this research stream in¢lud¢ the Int¢Tnational Reseawh Network on Critical Theory and ConservatiN'e Thoughi led by Dr David McGrogan, which began with an iniemaiional ¢onference in January 2024. and is developing discussion in the areas of demo¢racy and tyranny; philosophical, legal and regulatory i55ues around the digitisation of Currencies and payments. and coii)peling conceptions of liun)an rights and civil liberties. Over the course of the AutumtLIWinrer sem¢si¢r of 2024125. Dr David McGrogion is also running a bi-weekly Teading group. Tyranny and Political Rea50n. Thi5 reading group brings together an interdisciplinary collection of scholars io discuss the quesiion of ihe legitimacy of ihe state in modernity in th¢ ¢ont¢xt of Xenophon's Hiero, a 4ih Century BC Greek di#lvgue un the PTobleni of tyranny. In the background, Nicolo Machiayelli's 11 Pn'ncipe and Leo Strauss, essay On Tyrnnny fomi an lin￿rtant pan of this discussion. Further initiatives will look at the impact of Al wiihin the history of what has Ii)os¢ly b¢¢n call¢d'Cybem¢lics'. This project was fornially laun¢h¢d on 10 May 2024 with a confer¢n¢e organised by Prof. El-Bizri (see above. under "signifi¢anl activilics") and will b¢ followed by a further symposium in Cambridge in late Autumn of 2025. We have fonnally established a mechanism for support in due course of a r¢s¢ar¢h fellow in Pelerhouse. Cambridge. and plans ar¢ now well advanced for ihis, pan of the Falsafa project {see also aboi'e) to open up and makc niore widely available the historic contriburion of Islam in Europe. Events are being planned from the summer of 2025. A relaiionship between the Fouiidation and the Tyrannica (Thc Interdisciplinary Network for ihe Study of Tyranni¢s. Pcr50nalist Dictatorships and Authoritarian Regimcs) network al the University of Notlinghani is also under discussion.
