The Knapp Foundation was creaied in memory of Dr Fcrdinand Knapp, who died in 2014. Dr Knapp
was a Gemian citizen with Aus(Tian roots who studied at Heidelberg, Edinburgh and Cajnbridge and
became a bank¢r in ihe Uniid Kingdom. He was a gifted linguist with a love of Gem)an, French and
English literature and of the European intellectual ￿adItiOn from its origins in antiquity to thc present day.
The Foundation exists 10 promote the exploralion and und¢tstsnding of Ih¥i iradition, including ils political
and religious eleinenis and their challengers, lis cu￿¢nI relevance, and its ￿ssIble futur¢. The
Foundtstion fuiids scholars of Euro￿an inlellcciual and social history to carry out philosophical,
hibtori¢al, and ￿ChiVa1 siudy. parfiLularly in uniYer5ilies and higher places of learning.
The Foundation was established as a Charitablc Incorporalcd Organisaiion ICIO) in Scptcinber 2022,

work connecting ancient philosophy, and in particular ihe work of Parnienidcs, Anaximander and
H¢rJ¢lilus, with ¢ontcniporary ihinking. The Hcidegger and Classical Thoughi proJ¢¢t ¢oniii)ues lo
include a successful and highly engagiiig we¢kly vinual seminar (now in lis fifth year) bringing togcther
soine of Ihe leading experts on Martin Hcideggerfs philosophy from around the world in philosophy and in
classical philology, led by Professor Laurence Hemming and DT AJroii Turner, working in Eiiglisli. Gernian

The Foundation is Continuing ¢0 support ihc ¢siablishmcni of ihe Falsafa Projcct on Thc Intcllectual History
of Islain in Europc, within the research stream on the Shape and Hisiory of the Wesi, lcd by Prof¢ssor
NidLr El-Bizri who has b¢¢n joined by Professor John Mar¢nbon of Trinity College, Cainbridge. and Dr
Magnu5 Ryan of Peterhouse, Cambridge (who Ix)ih joined th¢ a¢ad¢mi¢ advisory l)Odrd of ih¢ Foundation in
lai¢ 2024), who will help shape the project.
This iniportant project is examining the relationship beiween Islam and Westem Th¢ology and Philosopl)y
aiid tl)e wid¢ly a¢cept¢d narraiii'¢ that Islam ¢an b¢ ¢on¢eiv¢d as "oulside" to thc Wes¢ (with a far wider
dclinition of the Ivest than is familiar to mostl. T￿"5 work began with a successful international symposium
on the 10th May 2024 ai whi¢h Professor iaur¢n¢e H¢mming and Professor Nadcr El-Bizri presented papers
inirvduLin¥ the cor¢ themes of the project and four respondents (Oli%'er Leaman, Faisal Devji. Georges Tamer,
and Kata Moser) offered remarks and feedback on the scope of the projc¢i.
As part of the research stream on the Geography and History of the Wesl (Geography and Geopolitics)
Profebsor Laurence Hemming gave several preliminary papers in London and Tbilisi ith January 2024 in
preparation for a projeet with Dr Lasha Kharazi in G¢grgia. In th¢ laic summer of 2024 Laurence Hemming was
ini'ited to become a Board Member of the Charles Malik Institule and swke at an inaugural conf¢r¢n¢¢ in
Washington DC on the question of the hisiory and ¢ritique of Ori¢ntalism.

Within ihe research stream on ￿'StOry and Histori¢ality, Dr Aoron Turner has continued io lead a project on
Th¢ Ess¢nce of History which is supported by the Foundation.
The Foundation has also continued io support Tesearch on TeclmocTacy and Modernity and in 2024
Laurence Hemming began supetvising a non-UK PhD SDJdeni at th¢ Uni¥'¢rsity of tAn¢asier working in this area.
Other initiatives in this research stream in¢lud¢ the Int¢Tnational Reseawh Network on Critical Theory and
ConservatiN'e Thoughi led by Dr David McGrogan, which began with an iniemaiional ¢onference in January
2024. and is developing discussion in the areas of demo¢racy and tyranny; philosophical, legal and
regulatory i55ues around the digitisation of Currencies and payments. and coii)peling conceptions of liun)an
rights and civil liberties. Over the course of the AutumtLIWinrer sem¢si¢r of 2024125. Dr David McGrogion
is also running a bi-weekly Teading group. Tyranny and Political Rea50n. Thi5 reading group brings
together an interdisciplinary collection of scholars io discuss the quesiion of ihe legitimacy of ihe state in
modernity in th¢ ¢ont¢xt of Xenophon's Hiero, a 4ih Century BC Greek di#lvgue un the PTobleni of tyranny.
In the background, Nicolo Machiayelli's 11 Pn'ncipe and Leo Strauss, essay On Tyrnnny fomi an lin￿rtant pan
of this discussion.
Further initiatives will look at the impact of Al wiihin the history of what has Ii)os¢ly b¢¢n call¢d'Cybem¢lics'.

The period covered by this report saw the provision of funds by several generous donors, dllowin&b the

FUTURE PLANS
We have planned an ambitiOU5 Programme of fuiure work. including for ¢xainplc further research
and publications on the intellectual hisiory of Islam in Europe. This project was fornially laun¢h¢d on 10
May 2024 with a confer¢n¢e organised by Prof. El-Bizri (see above. under "signifi¢anl activilics") and will
b¢ followed by a further symposium in Cambridge in late Autumn of 2025. We have fonnally established
a mechanism for support in due course of a r¢s¢ar¢h fellow in Pelerhouse. Cambridge. and plans ar¢ now
well advanced for ihis, pan of the Falsafa project {see also aboi'e) to open up and makc niore widely
available the historic contriburion of Islam in Europe. Dr. Magnus Ryan. Fellow and Director of Studies
in History at Peterhouse, will oversee ihe developinent of the fellowship once rh¢ f¢llow is appointed.
The Heidegger and Classical Thought projeci will Cunlinue it5 successful and highly engaging
weekly virtual seminar and will finish working through Manin Heidegger's leciure course Holderlirts

Within the Essence of History project, Dr Turner has organised a major internation81 conference
on AliertiinisM'isseJisc'haft and Hi.4toricism lo be held in Senaie Hous¢, London, from the 26th-28th February
2025. Thi5 conference will bring Icading ¢xpens in ¢l&ssics. history, and philosophy to discuss the deeply
collaboralive relalioi)ship b¢iw¢¢n classical and hisiorical studies in thc lalc 18thlearly 19ih Ceniuries which,
today. has all bui ceased to exist.
As pan of the Ori¥ins of Contemporary Thought research stream and ihe Why Greece. project. Dr Turner
will be organising an online colloquium on Holderlin's Hellenisiii to be held on the 24th-25th of April 2025.
The aiin of this colloquiuni is to enquir¢ inio ihe ground of ihe relaiion betweeii Holdcrlin's obs¢urily in the
19tl) Ccntury and his r¢vival in the first decad￿ of the 20th Century in the context ol th¢ H¢ll¢nism thal lic5 at
tli¢ heart ol. hi5 work. In boih instances. the question of ihe spirit of G¢rniany laiid, to son)e exlent, tlie W¢stl
was broughi into relief against th¢ ev¢r-lingering shadow of Ancient Greece.
The Foundation is Coniinuing io build relalionships with acad￿nI¢S and universities io devclop future
work wiihin its research stream on Te¢hnocra¢y and M(dernity, opening questions around Th¢ Faie ol- the
Univ¢rsity and quesiions of Polilical Philosophy. To this ¢nd il has ¢stablished a Working Group in
Conservative Philosophy which is being led by Professor John M#renbon, Trinity College, Caiiibridg¢.
Events are being planned from the summer of 2025. A relaiionship between the Fouiidation and
the Tyrannica (Thc Interdisciplinary Network for ihe Study of Tyranni¢s. Pcr50nalist Dictatorships and
Authoritarian Regimcs) network al the University of Notlinghani is also under discussion.
Publlcatlons
ACTOSS the research streams, several publications or¢ now cither in print or contracted. For the Heid¢gger
and Classical Thought proj¢¢l, a volume on Heidegger and Classical Thought edited by Dr Turnei was
publish¢d in Septen)ber 2024 by SUNY Press. This volume bring5 logether a mix of philosophers and
classicists (including Charles Bamba¢h, Babeiie Babich, David F. Krell. Laurence Hemining, Claudia

Prof. Hemming and Dr Turner are ediling a volume on Heidegger and Parnienides which will be published
by Roivman & Littlefield in early 2025. This volume asks lis ¢ontribuiors (including Daniel O. Dahlstrom.
Daniela Vallega N¢u, Lasha Kharazi, Laurence Hetnming. Jussi Backman. and Aaron Tum¢r} lo
cxplore the strong influence of Pannenides of Elea on the development of Heidegge￿$ thinking
Ihroughoui his lifetime. Lauren¢¢ Hemming and Aaron Turner are currently translatiilg Heidegger's
und¢liv¢r¢d l¢¢ture course. The Saying of Anaximandcr. writien in 1942 and released as Volum¢ 78 of the
Collected Works (Gesaiiiiaiugabe) for Polity. This is planned w be published in 2026.
For the Why Greece. projecl, Parmenides, Plaio, and the Crisis of Sophisrry edired by Dr Aaron Turner
will be published in Spring ?025. by De GrU￿er. This volume is based on the ¢onl¢ren¢e Pamicnides
nnd ili¢ Sophisis. Coniributors include Daniel W. Graham. KatI￿n Morgan. Jenny Bryan. Amaud Macé,
