Structure, Governance and Management

The charity is based in England and works with communities in the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The registered and the principal address of the Charity is 85 Great Portland Street First Floor, London W1W 7LT. The Charity has achieved full registration on the 15[th ] of February 2022 and its Registered Charity Number is 1197932.

Organisational Structure

The charity Board of Trustees meet six times a year. Our Board of Trustees are responsible for making decisions on all matters that generally concerns the overall strategic direction and policy of the Charity. The day-to-day responsibility for the provision of service and activities of the Charity are delegated to the CEO and the Operations Team who are renumerated on project delivery and report back to the Board of Trustees.

Risk Management Policy

The Trustees are responsible for recognising and assessing any risks the Charity may face, ensuring that effective controls are in place to provide reasonable protection against liabilities, fraud, or anything that could disrupt the Charity’s operations.

Various control measures are maintained to minimise risks across banking, donations, income and expenditure, and the approval of expenses.

All staff members working with vulnerable individuals or young people undergo DBS checks, which are documented and updated regularly in accordance with the Charity’s policies. Staff and volunteers also receive consistent training in safeguarding, equality and diversity, and GDPR, ensuring they remain current with the latest legislation.

At each Board Meeting, Trustees examine and review the major risks confronting the Charity. The risk management policy itself is reviewed annually by the Board of Trustees. Systems are in place to monitor, manage, and mitigate these risks, helping to reduce any potential impact on the Charity’s work in the future.

Service 1.

LightZone – Funded by BBC Children in Need

The project operates in Derby, where recent data reveals a troubling reality: 38.3% of children in Derby City are living in poverty. In specific areas, the situation is even more severe, with 47.6%—nearly half—of children in the Derby South constituency experiencing poverty, including many refugees and asylum seekers.

LightZone focuses on regions with the greatest need, deprivation, and poverty, supporting disadvantaged young people aged 8 to 18 from Alvaston North, Alvaston South, Normanton, Sinfin and Osmaston, and Arboretum wards within Derby South. According to the House of Commons Library, the most deprived parts of Derby lie in the southern part of the city, which features 20 highly deprived Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs). These LSOAs are rated on seven deprivation measures: income, health and disability, employment, crime, access to services and housing, living environment, and education, skills, and training. Out of 533 constituencies in England, Derby South ranks 56th for deprivation and contains 20 highly deprived LSOAs, meaning almost half its areas face extreme hardship. These wards are among the 10% most deprived nationally and have a high proportion of ethnic minorities, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Children and young people in Derby South are disproportionately categorised as "hard-pressed." The area also faces higher-than-average crime rates, more hospital admissions, and notably fewer children eating a healthy diet. Police and Social Care records indicate rising levels of neglect, domestic abuse, and exploitation in these communities—risk factors that contribute to anti-social behaviour, school exclusions, and crime among local youth.

To address these psychological risk factors, LightZone provides opportunities for growth and development, helping young people in South Derby build prosocial identities through enrichment activities, social action programmes, and democratic participation. By using a strength-based approach, we support and nurture the development of cognitive, social, and personal skills, steering children and young people away from criminal activity and negative behaviours, and encouraging a positive self-image.

In essence, our prosocial programmes are designed to divert participants from antisocial behaviour, crime, and exploitation. We also facilitate the NHS’s Five Steps to Mental Wellbeing:

  1. Fostering connections: We create opportunities for children and young people to build friendships and develop a sense of belonging and self-worth. By sharing positive experiences, participants are able to offer one another emotional support and encouragement.

  2. Promoting physical activity: Our programme encourages regular movement, setting achievable goals such as completing a weekly fitness circuit or participating in kickboxing sessions. These activities boost self-esteem, provide healthy outlets for stress and anger, and help young people relax.

  3. Encouraging new skills: We introduce children and young people to fresh learning experiences that inspire curiosity and an appreciation for trying new things including cooking and baking.

  4. Nurturing generosity and leadership: We guide participants in learning the importance of sharing and supporting others. For instance, when someone joins for the first time, a peer acts as their buddy—showing them around, explaining

The project has supported over 400 children and young people—including many refugees. Thanks to our positive impact, we have developed strong partnerships with a range of local professionals and voluntary organisations.

LightZone Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) – Funded by Derby City Council and administered through Community Action Derby.

LightZone HAF stands out as one of the most prominent and well-attended holiday activity programmes in Derby. Around 75% of the children and young people who participate come from single-parent households led by mothers, families with only one working adult, children who are looked after, or families where a parent is recovering from a serious illness, such as cancer.

For many of these families, LightZone HAF is nothing short of a lifeline. Take, for example, a single mother with a history of domestic violence whose three sons attended the programme for the first time. She had recently been diagnosed with cancer and needed to be in hospital for further assessments during the week the HAF sessions were running. Her two younger sons, both in primary school, took part in sessions at a local community centre, while her eldest, in secondary school, attended the Basketball and Netball Camp. Fusion Scape arranged taxi transport for the boys, easing their mother’s concerns by ensuring they were safe, cared for, and well-fed while she focused on her health.

Another example is a single mother of two children who is training to become a social worker. She needed to attend classes during the Easter holidays, dropping her children off at 9:30am and collecting them at 2:30pm. We were aware of her situation and made sure there were two staff members available to open up in the morning and two to lock up at the end of the day. She told us how grateful she was for the team’s support, which meant she could focus on her studies in without worrying about childcare.

The strong relationships we have built with local parents over the years are a key reason our HAF sessions are so popular. Families trust our team implicitly to look after their children, and it’s a source of genuine excitement for us that so many children and young people not only enjoy LightZone HAF but return year after year, with some now in their second or third year of attendance.

LightZone HAF operates during Christmas, Easter, and Summer holidays, welcoming children from both Derby and the wider Southern Derbyshire Districts.

Service 2.

Summer Sports Camp 2024

Basketball and Netball Camp for Children and Young People

The camp featured dynamic basketball and netball sessions specifically designed for children and young people. This enriching experience was made possible thanks to the committed volunteers from Youth With a Mission, who journeyed from countries such as the USA, Australia, Spain, and the United Kingdom to help organise and run the camp.

Throughout the two week, campers participated in skill-building drills, friendly competitions, and team-building exercises designed to foster both athletic ability and personal growth. Under the guidance of experienced coaches and enthusiastic volunteers, each child was encouraged to challenge themselves, develop new techniques, and support their peers. Special workshops focused on sportsmanship and resilience, ensuring that every participant left with not only refined skills but also lasting memories and valuable life lessons.

The outcomes of the camp included:

Feedback from participants revealed that the programme made a meaningful difference in the lives of all who attended, many of whom came from disadvantaged backgrounds and a variety of social circumstances.

Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in structured, enjoyable sports activities that they might otherwise not have access to. Parents and guardians noted marked improvements in their children's social interactions and self-esteem, attributing much of this growth to the inclusive and encouraging atmosphere provided by the camp. Several young attendees shared that the experience inspired them to pursue ongoing involvement in community sports, and some even voiced aspirations to become mentors or coaches in the future. Such responses highlight the enduring benefits of the programme, extending well beyond the confines of the camp itself and into the wider lives of those it touched.

In conclusion, the sports camp empowered participants to build confidence, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and foster lasting friendships. The supportive environment not only enhanced their athletic abilities but also inspired a continued passion for sports and community involvement.

Warm Spaces – Fusion Youth Club

A welcoming community for young people

Overview

During the winter of 2023/2024, Fusion Youth Club joined the Warm Spaces initiative, offering a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for young people. The programme fostered connections, learning, and growth, supporting youth from all backgrounds and ensuring that everyone felt valued and at home.

What was on offer at Fusion Youth Club

Fusion Youth Club was open to all young people aged 11 to 18, regardless of background or circumstance.

Sessions ran twice a week throughout the colder months at the Indian Community Centre in Derby. Check our social media and notice boards for specific days and times.

Vortex Gaming Youth Club at Unity Café Derby

These sessions were part of the warm spaces initiative, providing a safe and welcoming place for families, parents, carers, and guardians to connect across generations. The Unity Café Derby fostered an inviting atmosphere where everyone, regardless of age or background, felt encouraged to join in. The air was alive with laughter and conversation as people of all ages tried out new games and shared stories over light refreshments. Volunteers were ever-present to ensure a sense of

inclusion and belonging, helping build relationships that reached beyond the club and into the wider community.

By offering these gatherings once a week, the initiative created an environment where intergenerational bonds could flourish. The Unity Café Derby became a hub of activity and warmth, with volunteers making sure each person felt valued, and friendships blossoming that extended well beyond the walls of the club.

Roma International Day 2024

The Fusion Scape Team successfully raised funds and organised the Roma International Day 2024, marking the first event of its kind since Covid-19.

Introduction

For generations, Roma and Traveller communities from diverse backgrounds have experienced layered discrimination in almost every country where they reside. These communities often encounter social barriers and prejudice that limit their access to rights, as well as their participation in public and political life. When public policies fail to recognise these unique challenges, they can unintentionally increase the vulnerabilities faced by Roma and Travellers.

International Roma Day serves to spotlight the discrimination endured by Roma communities around the world and to champion universal human rights. While International Roma Day is most commonly celebrated on April 8th, some communities may choose to mark the occasion a few days before or after, depending on local resources and planning.
