The Charity seeks to promote equality and diversity in the arts through the Jhalak Prize and the Jhalak Children's and YA Prize. The Prize is for the book of the year by a writer of colour. The Jhalak Prize has already been specifically recognised by the Equality & Human Rights Commission as the type of action which the Commission supports and recommends.

Objects: The Objects Of The Charity Are, For The Public Benefit:a) To Promote Equality And Diversity In The Arts, In Particular But Not Exclusively By Promoting A Literature Prize For Writers Of Black, Asian And Minority Ethnic ('Bame') Descent;b) To Promote The Creative Arts For The Public Benefit, In Particular But Not Exclusively The Art Of Literature By Writers Of Bame Descent.
