Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 01-01-24 To 31-12-24

Charity name: Childhood Cancer Research Trust

Charity registration number: 1196005

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To relieve sickness, and preserve and
protect health for the public benefit by
providing funding for childhood cancer
research projects, primarily in the UK in
order to improve outcomes for childhood
cancer sufferers by finding safer and more
effective treatments at a fast rate.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
In 2024, the charity supported two main
activities aligned with these aims:
1.
CCRT RSII Initiative– The charity
established this structured initiative
focused on exploring the role of
residual normal systemic, cellular
and molecular dynamics in cancer.
The programme provides a
systematic framework for generating
and recording new knowledge
relating to the potential role of
natural compounds in securing net
health in the context of cancer.
2.
Ethical and Regulatory Review
The charity funded a
comprehensive strategic review of
the ethical, legal and regulatory
considerations relevant to the
integration of targeted, personalised
natural compounds into standard
paediatric cancer care.
This work is informing the charity’s
long-term strategy for progressing
towards a new design of clinical
trials for integrative treatments,
centred on biologically-informed,
multi-component, individually-
evidenced frameworks — ensuring
future activity aligns with best
practice, regulatory compliance, and
legal standards.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 In directing our efforts and resources, the
trustees of The Childhood Cancer
Research Trust have diligently considered
and adhered to the guidance issued by the
Charity Commission regarding public
benefit. This guidance underscores the
importance of ensuring that all charitable
activities directly contribute to the public
good, in line with our charitable objects.
This fiscal year, our commitment to
maximizing public benefit was exemplified
through the launch of the CCRT RSII
Initiative and formulation of a compliant
operational framework to support the
charity’s strategic progression. Importantly,
all funds raised have been allocated directly
to the ‘New Knowledge’ creation platform
and the ‘Ethical and Regulatory Review’,
with no overheads, salaries, or
administration costs deducted, ensuring
that every penny donated is directly applied
to advancing this vital work.
The new knowledge generated by the
CCRT RSII Initiative this year forms part of
the critical foundation the charity needs
successfully to pursue its mission and the
Charity Commission's expectations for
public benefit.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 In 2024, the charity set up the CCRT RSII
initiative which is focused on the dynamics
of normal health retained in the context of
cancer.
The initiative provides a framework for
systematically generating and capturing
new knowledge on the potential role of
natural compounds in individualized cancer
care.
While this investigative and exploratory
RSII Initiative is designed to build a
rigorous basis to facilitate the identification
of future research remits and new trial
designs, the ethical and regulatory review
has clarified the requirements for safely
and responsibly translating research into
potential clinical applications.
In support of these endeavours, the
Childhood Cancer Research Trust formed
a Board of Consultants who are invited to
inform our initiatives with their insights and
opinions on an ongoing basis.
We have selected high level professionals
who are grounded in their knowledge and
have experience of working with complexity
and evolving landscapes while adhering to
the highest possible standards of
professional practice.
Together, these achievements contribute to
the ongoing strategic objective of
transitioning new knowledge from the
analysis phase, via clinical trials into clinical
practice, with the potential to enhance
treatment efficacy and reduce side effects
associated with conventional cancer
therapies. Our efforts aim to fulfil our
mission to improve health outcomes for
children with cancer and contribute to the
broader societal goal of developing safer,
more effective therapeutic approaches.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The Childhood Cancer Research Trust
concluded the fiscal year with limited funds
in our account following the successful
disbursement of funds for the CCRT RSII
Initiative and Ethical and Regulatory review
that have resulted in the creation of further
core and substantial areas of new
knowledge. This aligns with our strategic
commitment to advancing medical research
and demonstrates effective use of donor
contributions for designated purposes.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 Reserve Policy Statement
Our charity maintains minimal reserves.
In the previous fiscal year, we allocated
£40,000 to The Concorde Initiative. This
disbursement successfully funded the
completion of Phase 1 of a critical
investment designed to generate new
knowledge in pediatric cancer research.
The success of this phase marks a
significant step towards achieving
breakthroughs that could ultimately benefit
children suffering from cancer.
We aim to allocate funds as quickly as
possible to the creation of new knowledge
which is urgently needed.

Demonstrating a passion for
advancing medical research and
improving healthcare outcomes.

Innovative thinking: Ability to
contribute new ideas and
approaches for transforming
medical research and patient care.

Medical or NHS background:
Although not mandatory, experience
in healthcare sectors is considered
a significant asset.

and training of trustees

Para 1.51

New trustees receive a copy of the current
version of the charity’s governing document
and the latest Annual Report and statement
of accounts. They receive a briefing on the
Charity’s objects, grant policy, disclosure
requirements and good governance
practice.
The charity’s organisational
structure and any wider
Para 1.51 The Childhood Cancer Research Trust
operates without any staff, focusing on
providing grants that support the research
initiatives led by Dr Alex Concorde at The
network with which the
charity works
Concorde Initiative. Dr Concorde serves as
the Medical Director of the charity,
leveraging her expertise to take the aims
and intentions of the CCRTs R&D policy
and map out and create a fleshed-out
directive of how the objects can be fulfilled
and then manage the enactment of it
through TCI.
Additionally, supported by our Board of
Consultants, the charity’s three trustees
oversee the progress of this multiphase
initiative, guaranteeing that all efforts
directly contribute to fulfilling our charitable
aims.
This streamlined structure allows for direct
and effective use of funds, maximizing
impact on paediatric cancer research
without the overhead associated with larger
organizations.
Relationship with any
related parties
Para 1.51 The Concorde Initiative, owned by Dr Alex
Concorde, is closely linked with the
Childhood Cancer Research Trust due to
the charity’s focused support of Dr
Concorde’s research. Dr Concorde has
been appointed Medical Director of the
charity in order to spearhead the translation
of the CCRT objects into action by
mediating between the mission of the
CCRT and the actual execution of the
charitable objects through her work at TCI,
thereby ensuring the research activities
align effectively with the strategic goals of
the Childhood Cancer Research Trust.
The relationship is managed under strict
governance practices to avoid any conflicts
of interest, ensuring that our collaboration
is transparent and maintains the highest
integrity. This arrangement enhances our
capacity to drive forward innovations in the
development of potential treatment and
care for children with cancer to a far greater
degree than might otherwise be possible.
