2 Structure, Governance and Management

Westfield Community Association registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on the 24[th] August 2021, (Reg. No.1195615) and is governed by a Constitution.

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the Constitution and give their time voluntarily.

3 Objectives and Activities

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document are as follows: -

1. The promotion for the benefit of the public of regeneration in the Westfield Area of Yeovil, Somerset by all or any of the following means:

2. A. The Maintenance, improvement, or provision of public amenities.

3. B. The provision of recreational facilities for the public at large or those who by reason of their youth, age, infirmity, or disablement, financial hardship, or social and economic circumstances, have need of such facilities.

4. C. The protection or conservation of the environment

5. D. The promotion of public safety and prevention or crime

6. E. Such other means as may from time to time be determined subject to prior written consent of the charity commissioners for England and Wales and

7. To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Westfield without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious, or other opinions, by associating together the said inhabitants and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisation in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and other leisure time occupations with the objects of improving the conditions of life of the said inhabitants. The “Area of benefit” is Westfield (Yeovil), defined as the area bounded by Preston Road, Larkhill Road, Thorne Lane and Ilchester Road.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects

• Acting as a voice for, and a point of contact for, residents.

• Environmental improvements (identification of and work on 46 ‘plots’ for bulb, tree and flower planting)

• Traffic safety reporting and support,

• Fundraising activities,

• Event organisation

• Police liaison,

• Litter picking projects,

• Liaison with and involvement of local schools,

• Maintaining & developing our ambitious Community Garden, for which we would very much welcome your practical or other support.

4 Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Whilst all the objectives and activities undertaken for public benefit listed in section 3 above have been actioned on a regular basis throughout the year, and progress has been made with embedding awareness of WCA’s existence and impact amongst a wider element of both residential and organisational sectors of the community, the following is a summary of activities in the year to 31[st] August 2025:

• Consistent progress continued to be made by the Westfield Community Garden Team. Many trees were planted in Westfield with great support by ‘Able2Achieve’. A grant was received from Abri towards the cost of picnic tables. The pathway from Stiby road entrance into the garden was widened to allow easier access for buggies and wheelchairs.

Through the opportunities presented by our ever-improving community garden, various groups benefited from sharing time, experience, interests and skills – not least, in addition to our regular volunteers, Able2Achieve and Somerset Wildlife Trust. Yet again the garden was awarded for its participation in IYN class of Yeovil in Bloom.

• A coach trip was arranged to the Houses of Parliament, which was very well supported, and also a useful fund-raiser.

• The free NHS dentistry for Westfield children project was making good progress but stalled when the Integrated Care Board suddenly stopped work on it and failed to answer enquiries. This is no doubt due to their ICB reorganisation but was disappointing to the schools and the community.

• Organisation of Adult courses was discussed with Yeovil College, but is currently on hold, pending concern with overlap with the Community Centre’s parallel work with the Somerset Skills group.

• Open meetings were held for residents, with invited speakers including Adam Dance MP for Yeovil.

• Rev David Keen and Sophie Clark from Abri spoke about adult isolation, low aspiration and skills. Discussions also on anti-social behaviour and diversity.

• Karl Maclean presented ‘Around the world in 80 parks.’

• Eva Hoffman spoke on ‘Helpful ways to bring more ease and joy into family life.’

• A low resource solution to Speedwatch called Autospeedwatch was identified and is being investigated in conjunction with the Town Council.

• WCA assisted with Christmas present wrapping at the centre for children from under privileged families

• Progress has been made with respect to adopting effective and up to date policies for the Association, including Equality and Diversity, and risk management.

• A successful application was made for a Community Grant from Spark.

• • The community association has been represented on the management committee of the St Peters Community Centre, indicating our commitment and support of this invaluable resource within our local community.

• Recruitment is a priority as we are short of resource to undertake the associations’ activities.
