Aims
The Daniel Phelan Trust was set up in memory of Daniel Phelan. Specifically, to promote good journalistic practice and to create pathways to encourage young people to consider a career in journalism.
Public benefit
The trust is mindful of the lack of diversity in the journalistic profession – currently 86% of professional journalists come from white ethnic groups. We are also mindful of the importance of speaking truth to power in any healthy democracy. We aim to encourage young people from unrepresented communities to find a voice and to consider a career in journalism.
Activities
Research – A report was commissioned to investigate the current availability of internships available in the publishing sector in respect of the development of an internship programme to be held on an annual basis at Civil Society Media .
Launch of inaugural writing competition
A promotional package was designed and issued to head teachers of all schools in Lambeth, Wandsworth and Lewisham. The first promotion issued by post, was followed up with email and telephone contact with individual schools at various stages throughout the Autumn term.
Communication with schools
To date the response particularly from the State School sector has been slow, so it was decided to extend the closing date to 30[th] January 2023.
Judging panel
The judging panel for the writing competition has been appointed comprising a range of media professionals from underrepresented communities and backgrounds.
Website development
All details of the writing competition are now on line including the full competition criteria and details of the judging panel.
