Aims

The Daniel Phelan Trust was set up in memory of Daniel Phelan. Specifically, to promote good journalistic practice and to create pathways to encourage young people to consider a career in journalism.

Public benefit

The trust is mindful of the lack of diversity in the journalistic profession – currently 86% of professional journalists come from white ethnic groups. We are also mindful of the importance of speaking truth to power in any healthy democracy. We aim to encourage young people from unrepresented communities to find a voice and to consider a career in journalism.

Activities

Research

Two research projects were commissioned from Tania Mason in December 2021.

Whilst many charities operate in this area, there is no existing journalistic competition as such. It was also found that there is little in the national curriculum pertaining to journalism or journalistic skills. The content relating to ‘Citizenship ‘being the closest fit in terms of subject matter. Both research papers were extensive and very useful in informing the trustees as to the context in which the trust is operating.

Website development

Development of a website commenced December 2021. www.danielphelantrust.org.uk was launched in July 2022.

Launch of inaugural writing competition

Documents were created outlining the purpose and terms and conditions of the competition.

Appointment of judging panel

A panel of eight judges has been appointed for the competition and presented on the website.

The panel consists of a diverse range of media professionals:
