THE CHURCH LAND TRUST

The Church Land Trust (TCLT) (Charity number 1193793) presents its annual report for the period ended 31[st] March 2023.

TCLT is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission on 12[th] March 2021 and operates under its Governing Document dated 9[th] March 2021.

OUR MISSION

TCLT aims to help Christian Churches use their land and property to further their mission and provide benefit for their congregations and their local communities. It is common for churches to sell assets to meet shortterm needs. TCLT aims to help explore more creative solutions allowing them to retain their asset base for long-term benefit and to achieve a sustainable income flow.

OUR OBJECTIVES

Three of TCLT’s founding trustees have decades of experience in the property industry (two as architects and one as a quantity surveyor). Their expertise will be central in driving the development of TCLT’s activities.

REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES

TCLT remains a very young charity, and much of the year was spent establishing the infrastructure to allow it to carry out its mission. After many months of delay and obstruction, we were finally successful in opening a bank account, which greatly broadened the Charity’s operational and financial options. Some early donations were received and the Charity registered for Gift Aid with HMRC. The TCLT website was also established during the year and it is now up and running. The website contains details of our mission and how we can help churches maximise the value of their property portfolio over the longer term while providing social benefit to the local community. It further provides a collection of case studies of relevant projects undertaken by particular churches.

TCLT was able to pay for the services of an occasional employee to accelerate the development of its databases. These represent the key value added provided by the Charity. These divide essentially into two categories. The first is a database of actual examples of churches which have embarked on creative projects to develop and modernise their property assets, while retaining ownership of them and enhancing facilities for both the church members and the local community. The second is a database of grant-making trusts whose activities focus substantially on church and/or housing matters.

The trustees have also continued to take advantage of contacts in the property, church and charity worlds to build awareness of our mission.

FINANCES

TCLT’s bank account was opened in July 2023. The first deposits represented compensation from Lloyds Bank for their substandard performance in the opening of the account. Other positive flows came from individuals’ donations and Gift Aid claims on such donations. Notable outflows were represented by the cost of setting up the TCT website and sums paid to two individuals for work undertaken in developing TCLT’s databases. At the end of the period under review there was a modest balance of £1021 in the account.
