Over the twelve months during 2024 our team ttelivered a slep-change In the quality of day-104ay grounds maintenance in the park, launched a unique venue followng a multimillion restoration project. made rapid progress towards the start of an ambitious park regeneration scheme, and expanded the breadth and reach of the cultural. heritage and sporting programming for the benefrt of visitors. Beloved as a 'ba¢k garden, lo many people in the surrounding neighbourhoods, rt is a150 of national and international significance due lo ils design as the grounds lo the Victorian architectural masterpiece, The Crystal Palace, and ils rich unique herila9e including the 170-year-old world-famous dinosaurs. Today. circa one million people visit the park every year., lo relax and meet friends and family, lake part in sports and physical exercise. enjoy world<lass acts during summfjr leslival$, or simply have a moment ol peace and enjoyment of nature. However, followiny years of underinveslmenl and maintenance, il is now not only on the Herrtage al Risk Register 11self, but Is also home lo many other assets 8190 individually registered. In 8hort.' restoring and enhancing the physical environs of the park - both ils manmade and natural a$sel$ will be a long-lerm undtsrtaking. However, in recognition ol the huge vesting ol trust in our new remit. the Trust 16 concerned lo tackle as quickly as possible some ol the most serious delieils and Llefects in the park. This applies both lo the Important heritage asse15 in the park, bul also lo the day404ay faeililies that the visiting public need lo have safe enjoyment of the park. Our new grounds team delivered by external contractor Gavin Jone8 - gol lo work delivering a slep<hange in the level of care for park and. after years of a shoe-51ring maintenance regime, simple steps such as lilling potholes, clearing leaves from paths, improved liller ¢ollection, and graffiti removal were warmly received by the local community. Sighllines were improved in key locations by cutting back and thinning bushes. increasing the safely perception of park visitors particularly al dusk, and more regular tree surveying and works 18ckled the risk lo people from 1811ing branches. Of course il is not possible to tackle all the issues lacing the green. blue and built assets in this complex. 200 acra Site. particularly given thè scakg of thg heritage and maintenance dgficil. but the hard work has truly begun and the team is le8rning how best lo care lor the park so th81 il is sale, welcoming and enjoyable for all visitors. as well as a place where wildlife can flourish. In leslamonl lo the progress already bein9 made, the GLA-run National Sports Centre has ¢onlra¢led the Trust lo cover their grounds maintenance as well and unify 118 811e- wide management. Unfortunately, as an urban location with a porous perimeter that is a¢¢gssibl& 24 hours a day, Ihfj park experienced some theft and vanda11sm during the ygar. Incidents includgd graffrti lo heritage assets, theft of gTDunds maintenance tools and equipment, and - most devastatingly - the theft of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Memorial Trophy. The Trust worked closely with the local police team and also employed on-site physical security guards alongside seeking advice from English Heritage's and Historic England's security ad¥ and will be eonducling a lull security audit exercise during 2025. Subway restoratlon Stepping away from the day-l04ay, the most significant enhancement lo the park was the eomplelion of the major £3.6m. two-year resloralion of the Grade Il'.listed Crystal Palace Subw8y. The Subw8y - originally the pedestrian access for raiaY passengers coming to see The Crystal Palace had been largely derelict for eighty years after suffering severe damage from anli-aircraft fire during WWII. Funding for the work was secured thanks lo a 14-year cgmmunily-led resloralion campaign spearheaded by the Friends ol Crystal Palace Subway. with Major grants awarded by Historic England and the City of London Strategic Investment Pol. Custodianship of the Subway was transferred to Trust upon ils re-openin9 in September 2024, which we marked with a series ol celebratory events and free Open Days. The history of the Trust's origins is one of eommunily passion and aetivism and il is vital lo the success of the charity that il maintains a strong connection lo the needs. inleresls and aspirations of the neighbouring comrnunilies. During 2024 we began lo build a series of academic partnerships to support the development of schools and community engagement programmes as well as the delivery of skills and training in the future. Our new Senior Communty Programmes Manager, recruited wrth thanks lo the National Lottery Community Fund grant, slarted in post in Spring and quickly got lo work building the policie5 and procedures needed to launch the Trust's first safr. accessible and meaningful volunteering OPPOrtunilies so that everyone who wants lo gel involved in the park can do so in a way that Interests them. Building on the lessons learned, the volunteer programme will launch fully in 2025. with The National Lottery Heritage Fund enabling the re¢ruilmenl of 1 FTE Volunteer Officer lo support volunteer recruilmenl and coordination. We continued lo work wrth the park s dedicated and enlhusiaslic speci81isl Friends, groups and Dlher local commLknity stakeholders. Most notable among these were the Crystal Palace Museum. Friends of Crystal Palace Skatepark, Crystal PaL4ce Foundation. Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. Friends ol Crystal Palace Park, and Invisible Palace. In addition lo bilateral working, quarterly information sharing sessions were established and the Trust provided practical support lor the groups through measures such a5 paying for their insurance as well as providing support in vital areas such as risk as5essmenls. safeguarding and volunteer management trainin9. A critical workslream has also been ensuring that the groups have the opportunity lo input into the designs and Interprelalion plans for the upcoming regeneration proieel, bringing lo bear their unique expertise and knowledge, working together and with new voices lo tell the stories of the park and ils rich history. Finally, It is important lo mark that two 'Friends of groups- Friends gf Cry$lal Palace Bowl Ilhè outdoor concert venue) and Friends ol Crystal Palace Subway - disbanded during the year as a resutt of having suece6slully delivered on their campaigns to save unique assets which had fallen into disrepair and been out ol public use for decades. The Trust is indebted lo the remarkable dedication. hard work and passion of the volunteers behind the group5. Looking ahead. we will also soon be gslablishing new park user Advisory Groups in 2025 with rocruilmenl starting in early spnng lor specialist Access and Youth panels. Participants will be financially compensated for their time lo onsure those from a wide varelY of economic backgrounds are able lo join in. Partners and Funders Spe¢ial recognition musl go lo the London Borough of Bromley's Regeneration team, with whom we have extensively collaborated with over the year as we co-develDped the detailed ¢Jesign$ for the upcoming regeneration works. This is a flagship partnership, of which there are few comparators nationally, and we l¢)ok forward lo going from strength to strength together. We are also grateful for the continued advisory and funding support from Historic England (HEI along with olhgr valued lunders including the National Lottery s Heritage and Community Funds. the Wollson Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, and the London Marathon Foundation amongst others. During 2024 the Trust eslab115hed regular eng8gement meetings with Councillors representing comrnunilies across the five neighbouring London borDU9hs of Bromley, Croydon, Lambelh. Lewisham and Southwark. We also continued lo serve as 8 key stakeholder lo the mutti-million-pound regeneration plan for the Greater London Aulhorily's National Sports Centre. which sits wholly within the footprint of the park but outside of the Trust's remit. Organlgatlonal resillence The Twsl's organisalion81 malurty has come on leaps and bounds in the last twelve months. Fir81ty, we grew from 9 staff lo 14 with the introduction of new roles including a Head of Finance and Corporate Services, a Senior Community Prograrrimes Manager, a CommLnicalions and Marketing Manager, a Volunteer Officer and a Community Engagement Officer. During the year, the Trust was governed by a diverse board of 11 trustees, many drawn from the kjcal area and selected for their professional skills via an open recruilmenl proeess. The Trust's wholly owned subsidiary, Crystal Palace Park Events Limited, governed by a separate board ol director5 SUPPOrted our commercial revenue-generating activities. We began to develop and diversify our income streams throughout the year. most notably through the inlroduclitsn of car parking charges in the summèr. While the car parking charges were undoubtedly not universally popular, they now provide a vital Income stream which Is reinvested directly back into the care and development ol the park Is well as working lo Incenlivise environmentally friendly travel to the park among visitors. At the end of 2024 we commissioned external commercial support lo expbre options lor further revenue generating opportunities such as an expanded food and beverage offer. retail and enhaneed events and experiences, working lo create a 'lull day out, offer lor visitors from near and further afield.
