The Wells Skatepark Group is primarily an awareness, consultation and fundraising role and we work in collaboration with Wells City Town Council

Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

The Objects of the CIO are for the benefit of the health and wellbeing of the inhabitants of the city Wells and the surrounding villages, to improve access to leisure and improve conditions of life for the inhabitants of the community particularly, young people and families.

The CIO aims to promote, raise funds and co-ordinate the provision of a multipurpose wheeled sports park allowing for BMX, Skateboarding, wheelchairs, cycling, roller skating/blading and scootering.

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings.

The main activities were as follows:

• Worked with the city council to identify and evaluate the existing location and consider other suitable locations for the wheeled sports park within Wells Somerset.

• Conducted public consultation surveys

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

• Investigated fundraising options, including the setting up of a just giving platform and started applying for grants

• Tendered for and chose a developer who could ultimately build a Skatepark in Wells, to give an idea of the funds needed to be raised.

The overall purpose of our charity is to provide the community with a sustainable, long lasting wheeled sports park that will increase accessibility to all, improve physical and mental well-being for the community and provide invaluable social benefit and community connection.

Part of our role is also to raise awareness. Skateparks are often surrounded by a stigma that they are frequented by troublemakers and that it’s not a “traditional sport” and the riders can be discriminated against for this, we advocate for the clear benefits that a high quality accessible park can achieve for skateboarders, scooters, BMX and roller skaters.

Our initiative aims to strengthen community connections by creating a space for a multi-generational community to come together, enjoy recreation and the benefits that provides.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Although early days for the charity we have achieved an amazing gathering of supporters from the community in response to our objectives.

The project has shown community organisation in action. The need for improving community facilities has gathered a group of volunteers into working in collaboration and with full support of the local council. It has brought forward young people who have shown their support and commitment by offering to speak at meetings and giving us their gratitude for instigating the project which has been heart-warming. Youth workers, an architect, a web designer and an acoustics engineer are also some of the professionals that have come forward to offer their help.

We have the full support of town, district, county councillors and the local police. We have had two initial community consultations via the local newspaper, social media and face to face to gauge support for the project and the response has been hugely positive and there is a clear need and want for the project - of those consulted 97% agreed

We have taken steps to begin applying for funding, set up a just giving page and awarded the tender to a developer of the new Skatepark.

The city council are fully engaged and committed to work with us and are working through the outdoor spaces committee to to choose the best site for the park.

Cash at bank at 20.01.22 was £251 in unrestricted funds. Our aim is to Brief statement of the fundraise through grassroots community initiatives, business donations charity’s policy on reserves and applying for grants in the coming year in sufficient amounts to build a new wheeled sports park within the Wells Somerset area.
