Dear Beneficaries,
AsCEOandFounderoftheThelmaMatildaAlvesFoundation,I amthrilledtoreflectontheremarkableprogress we
have made this year. Our missionto addressmental healthchallengeswithinBlack communitieshas been at the heart
of everythingwe do. We have been workingdiligentlyto establishpartnershipswith other Black-ledcharities, allowing
us to broaden the discussion of mental health and provide our beneficiaries with holistic advice and support.
This year has been particularlyexciting,as we launchedour first-everexhibition,Sounds& Storiesfrom the Windrush,
whichcelebratedourcommunity'sresilienceandhistory.Wearealsoproudtohavesecuredfundingfor our
CounsellingSponsorshipSchemeforthenextfiveyears,ensuringthatwecancontinuetoofferlife-changing mental
health support to those who need it most.
We were honouredto be featuredin the EalingTimes,whereourworkwas highlighted,andto be recognisedby The
NationalLotteryfor ourcontributionsto the community.As partof thisrecognition,we were invitedto Tilbury Docks
during Black History Month to celebrate our achievements and the impact of our work.
Aswemoveforward,weremaindeeplycommittedtosupportingBlackwomenandthewiderBlack community,
addressing their unique mental health needs and fostering growth, healing, and empowerment.

In2023/2024,wehaveexperiencedthecontinuedriseinthecostoflivingandmanystrugglingtomakeends meet
whichhasplacedfurtherchallengesuponmentalhealth.Thishasresultedineitheragreaterneedtoaccess mental
health services or individuals not being aware of support that might be available to them.
TheThelmaMatildaAlvesFoundationhasrespondedthroughthecontinuationofonlineserviceswhichhas enabled
us to notonlyincreaseourreachgeographicallybutalsoincreasethe numberof women thatcan access our services.
With an excess of 100 women utilising our services, this is an achievement to be celebrated.
Fundingfor charitieshave continuedto decline which has resultedin some services being ceased or reduced.With the
hardworkofourCEOandnewlyappointedProjectManager,TheThelmaMatildaAlvesFoundationhas been
fortunateto securea varietyof fundingfor 2023/2024andlauncheda counsellingsponsorshipscheme which funded
free counselling sessions for black women who have been unable to access counselling otherwise.
AnotherchallengefacedwithintheUKhasbeenwithintheNHSwithprolongedwaitingtimes,lackofbeds, staff
shortagesandanincreaseinCAMHsreferrals.ThethresholdforfurthersupporttobeputinplacewhenADHD is
suspectedishighandmanywillnotreceivethenecessarysupport.TheThelmaMatildaAlvesFoundation have
successfullycollaboratedwithADHDbabestoprovideadditionalsupporttoblackwomenwhomaynothavehad an
opportunity to acquire support.
Werecognisethatthereisstillalotofworktobedonebutwehaveconfidenceinknowingthatwehavea strong
community of supporters.
Iwishtothankalloursupporters,ourpartners,volunteers,staffandboardmembersfortheircontinuedhard work
anddedicationto the foundation.You have all contributedto makinga remarkableimpacton the lives of many black
women and I look forward to the year ahead.

Thetrusteespresenttheirreportwiththefinancialstatementsof thecharityfortheyearended31 March2024. The
trusteeshaveadoptedthe provisionsof AccountingandReportingby Charities:Statementof Recommended Practice
applicableto charitiespreparingtheiraccountsin accordancewiththe FinancialReportingStandardapplicablein the
UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
The charity'sobjectivesare to preserveandprotectthe mentalandemotionalhealthof womenof African/Caribbean
descent.Also,advancetheeducationforthepublicbenefitamongmentalhealthpractitionersandwomen of
African/Caribbean descent who have an interest in mental health.
We aim to do this through:
a)theprovisionoftraining,workshops,events,andresourcesdesignedtoaidunderstandingofhowmental health
manifestsin women of African/Caribbeandescentand their experienceof accessingmental healthcareservices and to
support the delivery of appropriate mental healthcare services for them;
b)theprovisionofbursariesandawardstosupportwomenofAfrican/Caribbeandescentwhoarestudying for
professional qualifications to enable them to become mental health practitioners; and
c) the provision of mental health resources, including, where appropriate, access to professional counselling.
Ourprogrammesandactivitiesthatwedeliverenableustoachieveourobjectivesthroughaseriesof online
workshopsandsessionsdesignedandfacilitatedbymentalhealthprofessionalsonarangeoftopics concerning
women of African/Caribbean descent mental health.
Vision-InBritain,womenofAfricanandCaribbeandescentreceiveadequateandeffectivementalhealth and
wellbeing care.
Mission-TransformingthementalhealthsectorinBritaintoimprovetheunderstandingofwomen of
Africa/Caribbeanmental health.By increasingthe knowledgeof mental healthprofessionals,increasingthe number of
women of African/Caribbeandescent mental healthprofessionals,centringthe community'sopinionsand experiences
in mental health programme designs, and improving access to mental health and wellbeing care.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
*Sounds & Stories from the Windrush Exhibition.
*We held seven Saturday sessions with 101 attendees.
*Four collaborations with our partners such as ADHD Babes, The Motherhood Group and Black Girl Finance.
*We were awarded £191,133 in funding from The National Lottery Fund for our counselling sponsorship scheme.
*We began developing partnership with Turn2us to assist in the development of their pilot programme.
*Our charity was featured in the Ealing Times.
*Our CEO was invitedto the TilburyDocks by The NationalLotteryFund to be celebratedas part of their Black History
month event.
Sounds & Stories from the Windrush Exhibition
Sounds and Stories of the Windrush,curatedby the Thelma MatildaAlves Foundationwith Poet in the City, responded
to the experiences- bothphysicaland metaphorical- of London’s'Windrushgeneration'throughcontemporary visual
art.
ThebroughttogethercontemporaryworksbyemergingBlackBritishpaintersandillustratorssuchas,Rudy Loewe,
Jacob V. Joyce, Tamia Stone-Martin, Yvadney Davis, and Sade Popoola.
As well as personalarchivesandaudiointerviews- to rendernew perspectivesandclosenessto themes of belonging,
displacement, liberation and navigating (in)visibility as descendants of migrants.
On June 22 - the 75th anniversaryof HMT Empire Windrushdockingin Englandfrom Jamaica - we hostedour opening
event.WithperformancesfromBritish-JamaicanpoetsKarenMcCarthy-WoolfandJeremiahBrown,andmusic spun
on vinyl by legendary soundman and DJ, Gladdy Wax.

Black History Month 2023
IncommemorationofBlackHistoryMonththisOctoberandthe75thanniversaryofWindrushin2023,The National
Lotterycelebratedand reflectedupon the huge contributionmade by Windrushpioneersand their families across the
UK.
On Monday30thOctober,The NationalLotteryinvitedourCEO to the unveilingof a uniquepieceof art,a wireframe
structure in the shape of HMT Windrush, at Tilbury Docks, the port where the ship docked in 1948.
Theartworkfeaturedtheportraitsofpeopleandprojectswhohavedoneincrediblethings,withthehelpof funding
fromTheNationalLottery,tocelebratetheWindrushgenerationanditsimpactontheircommunitiesand modern
British life.
TheportraitofournamesakeandourCEO’sgrandmotherwasfeaturedasoneoftheportraitsontheinstallation to
capture the work we do within your community.
OurCEOalsohadtheopportunitytospeakwiththeEalingTimes,wheretheydiscussedthecompany's recent
achievements,futuregoals,andcommitmentto innovation.Thisconversationhighlightedourdedicationto fostering
growth and making a lasting impact in the industry.

WealsohadtheprivilegeofworkingwithFreudsDigitaltocreateimpactfuldigitalcontentaddressingcritical topics
suchasBlackwomen'smentalhealthandracialisedhealthinequalities.Throughthiscollaboration,wewereable to
highlighthow the fundingfrom the NationalLotterysupportedourSounds& Storiesfrom the WindrushExhibition in
June 2023, bringing these important conversations to a wider audience.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Financial position
Incomethisyearwas£40,073(2023:£25,116)withanexpenditureof£45,463(2023:£15,406)givingadeficit of
£5,390 (2023: £9,710 surplus).
Reserves policy
Thetargetrangeissetat3-6monthsofourexpenditure.TheBoardofTrusteesconsidersthatthistarget range
provides flexibility in the context of operations of our organisation.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The Thelma MatildaAlves Foundationis governedby a constitutiondated 12th December 2020. Under this document,
thecharityisregisteredandoperatesasaCIOandhasthepowertodoanythingwhichiscalculatedtofurther its
objectsoris conduciveorincidentalto doingso.The charitytrusteesshallmanagetheaffairsof theCIO andmay for
thatpurposeexerciseallthepowersoftheCIO.Moreover,thecharitytrusteesmaydelegateanyoftheirpowers or
functionstotheChairoftheTrusteeBoard,anemployee,acommitteeorcommittees,and,iftheydo,they shall
determine the terms and conditions on which the delegation is made.
Trustee recruitment and appointment
Under the constitution, trustees must be a natural person.
(a) No individual may be appointed as a charity trustee of the CIO:
- if he or she is under the age of 18 years; or
if he or she would automatically cease to hold office under the provisions of clause 12(1)(e).
(b) No one is entitledto act as a charitytrustee whether on appointmentor on any re-appointmentuntil he or she has
expresslyacknowledged,inwhateverwaythecharitytrusteesdecide,hisorheracceptanceoftheofficeof charity
trustee.
(c) At least one of the trusteesof the CIO must be 18 years of age or over. If there is no trusteeaged at least 18 years,
the remaining trustees may only act to call a meeting of the charity trustees or appoint a new charity trustee.

the year ended 31 March 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report
AsthecharitytrusteesoftheTrustyouareresponsibleforthepreparationoftheaccountsinaccordancewith the
requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I reportin respectof my examinationof the Trust'saccountscarriedoutunderSection145 of the Act andin carrying
out my examinationI have followedall applicableDirectionsgiven by the CharityCommissionunderSection 145(5)(b)
of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I havecompletedmyexamination.I confirmthatnomaterialmattershavecometomyattentioninconnection with
the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsof thecharity,whichis a publicbenefitentityunderFRS 102,havebeenprepared in
accordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReportingbyCharities:Statement of
RecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththe Financial
ReportingStandardapplicablein the UK and Republicof Ireland(FRS 102) (effective1 January2019)', Financial
ReportingStandard102 'The FinancialReportingStandardapplicablein the UK and Republicof Ireland'and the
Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income
All incomeis recognisedin the Statementof FinancialActivitiesoncethe charityhasentitlementto the funds,
it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructiveobligationcommitting the
charitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethatatransferofeconomicbenefitswillberequiredin settlement
andtheamountof theobligationcanbe measuredreliably.Expenditureis accountedforonanaccruals basis
andhas been classifiedunderheadingsthataggregateall costrelatedto the category.Wherecostscannot be
directlyattributedtoparticularheadingstheyhavebeenallocatedtoactivitiesonabasisconsistentwith the
use of resources.
Grants offered subject to conditionswhich have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment
but not accrued as expenditure.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restrictedfundscanonlybeusedforparticularrestrictedpurposeswithintheobjectsofthe charity.
Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Furtherexplanationofthenatureandpurposeofeachfundisincludedinthenotestothe financial
statements.
Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits
Thecharityoperatesadefinedcontributionpensionscheme.Contributionspayabletothecharity's pension
scheme are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.

ThisfundprovidesassistancetosmallercharitiesandimpactfulinitiativesintheSouthofEngland,aiming to
create a positiveimpact on their local communities.The fundingprimarilyenabledus to launchour counselling
sponsorship program, offering 15 hours of free counselling to black women from low-income backgrounds.
The National Lottery Community Fund
£6,980ofthegrantwasusedtoholdaseriesofmentalwell-beingactivitiesforBlackwomenacross London,
creatingspaceswheretheirstoriescouldbesharedandheard.TheFoundationorganisedsessions and
workshops,facilitatedbyBlackwomenmentalhealthprofessionals,tohelpparticipantsexploretheir mental
well-beingthroughcreativeandholisticmethods.Theseactivitiesbuiltonpreviouswork,whichhad shown
positiveimpacts on the mental well-beingof attendees.Additionally,the fundingsupportedan exhibition, held
incollaborationwithPoetintheCity,thatshowcasedartworkandpoetrybyBlackartists, highlighting
reflectionsontheWindrushandlifeinmodernLondon.Theoverallgoalwastoimprovemental well-being,
foster a sense of community,and raise awarenessof the charity'swork.Data collectedfrom the events helped
adapt future services to better meet the needs of the community.
Therestof thefundingis beingusedtoextenda counsellingsponsorshipschemeforBlackwomenin London
whoareunemployed,carers,orhaveahouseholdincomebelow£40,000andareexperiencingpoor mental
health.ManyBlackwomenfacefinancialbarrierstoaccessingtherapy,especiallyduringtheongoingcost of
livingcrisis.Theschemeaddressesthisbyoffering15hoursoffreecounsellingwithqualifiedBlack female
counsellorstowomeninfinancialdifficulty.ItaimstoreduceNHSwaitingtimes,whichcanbeaslongas 12
months,by providingimmediatesupport.Unlikethe NHS,whichlimitscounsellingto 10 sessions,this scheme
providesadditionalhoursandtheopportunityforwomentochoosetheircounsellor.Asuccessful pilot
providedcounsellingto five women, leadingto improvedmental well-being.Due to oversubscription,a waiting
list was created, demonstrating the need for expansion.

ThegrantwasacceptedonbehalfofADHDBabesCIC,astheyrequiredaregisteredcharitytomanage and
distributethefunds.ThesefundshavebeenusedtosupportavarietyofADHDBabes'activities,such as
coveringthewagesofthePodcastDirector,organisingin-personsocialevents,andfacilitating weekly
body-doublingandjournallingworkshops.Thegranthasalsosupportedtherunningoffortnightly support
groupsessions,allaimedatempoweringindividualswithADHD.ADHDBabesprovidesuswith monthly
updates on spending to ensure it aligns with the grant's criteria and terms and conditions.
