seminars, meetings, school programmes,
reading groups and library facilities and in
such other ways as the trustees see fit.

1.19		 (1) School programme – supplied £1,508
(2022: £4,367) worth of books to primary
and secondary schools in Sussex to
raise awareness and educate the
children about different races and black
British history.
(2) Walkie Talkie – This included a series of
walks across historic sites highlighting
local historic Black and Brown people
who lived in Sussex the slave trade. The
historic sites covered include:
●The Chattri,
●St Nicholas church Brighton
●Commowealth graves Seaford
The walks were open to ALL members of
the public irrespective of their ethic
background or race. The objective of the
walks was to educate people from all
cultural heritages about these historic
individuals who contributed to the local
community and nation. It was led by a
Black professional walking guide, used
published research material from a local
educator of colour and provided
attendees with light refreshment. The
walkie talkie event cost £900 and was
fully funded by the BME Engagement
Fund.
(3) School talks – Delivered in person talks
to spotlighting local historic figure Sarah
Forbes Bonetta.
(4) Through the charity’s website and social
media platforms, we continued to raise
awareness about black people (their
history and contribution to society) and
brilliant books by Black authors for
people to read.

school and local community. The school staff
have also been very grateful to see that
beautifully written reference books and story
books with diverse characters exist. It has
saved them researching time and they can
build the school’s collection through this.

The school talks help address any
stereotyped views that children and staff
may have of Black people. The topics are
fun for the children and focus on similarities
rather than differences between cultures.
The walks educated people about Black and
Brown soldiers who served Britain
demonstrating a common sense of national
identity and unity.
Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set		 Para 1.41 We continue to receive donations through
our justgiving page, and through local and
national companies. The fundraising is 100%
used to buy books for schools.
In November 2023, the charity received a
£4,071 ($5000) donation from Unum as part
of its CEO awards appreciating the
volunteering efforts of one of its trustees who
works for Unum. This was also in
appreciation of the book donation efforts of
the charity.

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period		 Para 1.21 At the end of the period, the charity had an
income of £8,717 (2022: £6,736) and, an
expenditure of £3,984 (2022: £7,311)
resulting in a surplus of £4,733 (2022: deficit
of £575) for the year.
This matched the bank balance as at 30
November 2023 of £4,863.
