(1) School programme – supplied £3,913 worth of books to primary and secondary schools in Sussex to raise awareness and educate the children about different races and black British history. (2) Reading groups – organised and facilitated an online book club for adults to read and discuss a number of classic literature. This inspired and encouraged individuals during the covid lockdown months. (3) Workshop – delivered an online workshop about Black British contributions at a Brighton secondary school as part of their Black History education in October 2021. (4) Library facilities – led a book assessment project for a secondary school in Lewes which led them to bring more balance and context to the books they use in the classroom as well as stock in their school library. (5) Through the charity’s website and social media platforms, we have raised awareness about black people (their history and contribution to society) |

Para 1.20 | The books provided to schools have made a difference in the lives of the children reading them. They see themselves in the books and it reassures them of their belonging to the school and local community. The school staff have also been very grateful to see that beautifully written reference books and story books with diverse characters exist. It has saved them researching time and they can build the school’s collection through this. The workshops have equipped the teachers and students with ability to evaluate how balanced/accurately various cultural groups are reflected in a book. It has provided them tools with which to balance any bias encountered in books, thereby ensuring a more accurate understanding of black people. |
