Introduction
This report covers the charitable activities of Woking Youth CIO, from the date established 2[nd] November 2020 until the end of the financial period 31[st] March 2022.
Youth Work is a distinct educational process adapted across a variety of settings to support a young person’s personal, social, and educational development.

As a charity we believe deeply in the positive transformative effect that youth work can have on young people. By providing long term support to young people, no matter the situation they find themselves in and through the provision of safe spaces for young people to participate in purposeful activities with positive role models, we believe that young people can become more encouraged, engaged, and empowered individuals.
Woking Youth was founded in 2020 after two local youth workers realised the increasing need for universal and free to access youth work within Woking.
Chief Executive’s report
As voluntary CEO and Youth Worker I have been able see the development of the charity from the initial idea, through to an organisation confidently taking its first steps into the future. It has been an exciting journey and we are looking forward to seeing the charity continue to grow over the coming years.
This process took longer than any of us expected, with a global pandemic and a diversion of public spending to support the national response needed in reaction to Covid-19. This was a frustrating time for the charity knowing that the needs of young people would increase during the pandemic. The closure of schools, sudden social isolation, and family bereavement only serving to compound challenges already faced by young people today. Thousands of young people became increasingly vulnerable and needed youth services and resources more than

ever before. Here in Surrey, thousands of young people found themselves in an increasingly vulnerable positions, with many of them needing our services and resources more than ever before.
However, we also knew we could use the unexpected hiatus to continue to develop our plans and project ideas, to build professional relationships and to really delve into the needs of the young people within Woking.
We set about this task with fervour and produced exciting plans for the future, created many good partnerships that we knew would be essential to Woking Youth and established ourselves as a valuable local asset.
I am greatly looking forward to the next phase of Woking Youth, which promises to be very active, with some fantastic opportunities for us and for Woking’s young people.

Activities
The objects of Woking Youth are:

To provide support, help and resource for young people between the ages of 11-25 living in the Borough of Woking, by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational, and other activities as a means of:

a. Advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities, and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature, and responsible individuals.

b. Advancing education.

c. Providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty, or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons.
In this first period Woking Youth have focused on establishing themselves within the locality with the community, funders, the local authority, and other local organisations.
This was initially challenging for us with diversion of funds and efforts due to the Covid-19 pandemic beginning within a short period of the charity receiving registration. This limited access to funds and made the opening of new Youth Drop-ins and projects unfeasible. Instead, the charity concentrated on building strong foundations and developing ready to go projects for when both funding and opportunities were available.
During this time, they developed wider professional networks, engaged with local youth support partners to create common aims and peer support between youth work

professionals and provided physical resources to support other local agencies working during this period.
A bank account was established and other administrative processes completed that would become necessary when delivery of services became possible. Much of this work was done in partnership and with the support of ROC (Reaching our communities) Woking who we had assisted in developing a local needs assessment published August 2020.
Notable work in this time frame is a piece of Detached Youth Work done in partnership with Woking Borough Council, ROC Woking, and Surrey Police. The charity engaged young people in West Byfleet to aid in decision making for funding allocated by Surrey Police to improve the local park, specifically to increase safety and reduce crime in this area.
Woking Youth has relied heavily on individual giving during this time to create reserves preparing to deliver work. We are thankful to all those who have supported the charity in its initial steps. The charity will continue to pursue small grants from local community organisations and the local authority to fund work on a short-term basis with the aim of using this to further establish credibility, to enhance local profile and to deliver projects in line with objectives.
Future Work
In the needs assessment carried out in August 2020, Knaphill was identified as an area that would benefit from Woking Youth opening a Youth Drop-in. Following conversations with Woking Borough Council and Knaphill Residents Association, a project outline has been accepted by all parties, a draft memorandum of understanding for funding from Knaphill Residents Association, and an application for funding from Woking Borough Council have been completed. We are hopeful that both will be accepted early in the 2022/2023 financial period and work can begin in the Spring term 2023. This will initially begin as detached Youth Work to get know the local young people and any specific needs followed by launching a drop-in youth session based at a local venue.
We will continue to apply for short term funding for Woking Youth from small grants and to build up independent giving with the view of applying for larger and more long-term funding opportunities in the future to enable us to expand further within Woking.
Achievements and Performance
Despite facing challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic Woking Youth has successfully managed to build its profile amongst youth practitioners and agencies within Woking.
We have delivered work alongside the Local Authority, Surrey Police and ROC Woking that will directly benefit the young people of Woking. We have enabled 27 young people in that

area to have the opportunity to have their say and empowered them to participate more in their community and helped bridge the gap between young people and the police.
We also offered health and safety advice to young people around Covid-19 in line with Surrey County Council protocols.
Further to this, we have spent over 100 hours participating in ROC Woking’s youth action group, taking a leading role on the creation of the Woking Youth Needs Assessment. This reached 158 young people between the ages of 10-25 and has contributed to youth strategy across the Borough.
