Neglected Tropical Diseases.
In June 2022 an expedition was carried out
to Marolambo, Madagascar, with a focus on
health education including training local
teachers to continue to deliver health
education throughout the year. The
expedition was primarily led by local
Malagasy doctors to facilitate ongoing
leadership of future expeditions. Focus
groups and qualitative educational research
was carried out within the communities to
better understand health and education
needs.

Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 In June 2022 MADEX carried out a
successful expedition to Marolambo,
Madagascar. The expedition focussed on
training local teachers to deliver health
education. By this ‘Teach the Teachers’
method, health education will continue to be
delivered throughout the year. This will
ensure that this community, which is known
to have a high health burden due to
Neglected Tropical Diseases, will continue to
benefit from health education throughout the
year.
The expedition was led by local Malagasy
doctors. This represents a successful
transition of team leadership from earlier
expeditions, which were primarily led by UK
team-members. This transition benefits both
the Malagasy doctors involved, giving them
opportunities for experience and career
development, and in addition improves the
sustainability of the project, thus further

benefiting the community as a whole.

Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 MADEX receives funds primarily through
small research and expedition grants. The
number of eligible grants has reduced since
the pandemic. The funding landscape gives
ongoing concerns about the charity
continuing. We are committed to our
purpose and as such, we are moving
towards local leadership in this area of
Madagascar, to ensure that the project can
be delivered in our absence.

bank account (Co-op community account).
Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46 N/A. No funds are held in investments.
A description of the principal
risks facing the charity
Para 1.46 The charity primarily receives income
through small research and expedition
grants. As a result of the COVID-19
pandemic, the number of eligible grants has
been significantly impacted.
Both COVID-19 and the funding landscape
are ongoing concerns to the charity’s
activities. We are committed to our purpose
and as such, moving forward we will focus
on local leadership for health education in
the local area of Madagascar, to ensure that
health education can be delivered in our
absence.
Note as MADEX has no financial
commitments, there are no financial risks to
the charity. There is only a risk to the
operational capacity of the charity due to
limited income and restricted travel.
Other Please note this is an updated return from
the previous return submitted May 2023. An
error was noticed in the previous submitted

accounts. After discussion with the charity commission, we were advised to resubmit the annual report and annual accounts. This is the reason for the apparent delay in the return submission.
