Section C Ob ectives and activities The scholarty study of all aspects of the history of the chemical scienc8S (including alchemy), the holding of meetings for the presentation and discussion of scholarfy papers. ether on its own or in nIunction with other leamed societies, and the pubSication of relevant material. especially in the Joumal of the Society, currently called AmbN. The trustees in 2020-21 have had regard to guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission. The trustees believe that a broad understanding of the history of the chemical sciences (induding alchemy) is of benefft to tha public by helping them to understand the place of chemisty in souety and culture over the centuries. As a leamed society it aims to advance education. the arts. culture, hertiage and science through scholarly andlor curatofial actFvty relating to the history of alchemical and chemical soence in any part of the world. Sp8afically. the charity achieved this by the followng: The charity's scholarly joumal Ambu has for over 80 years been a major means of academic stholarfy exchange, and therefore is of public benefit. It is sold to institutt¢)ns and libraries, as well as distnbuted to members (annual membetship fee in 2020 and 2021 was £40, reduced to £30 for retired membars of 10 years, standing and to £25 for students) There were 55,178 downloads of artides published in Ambix and rts back catalogue (dating from 1937) from 1 July 2020 through to 31 December 2021. The net surplus from membership subscrtptions and this publishing adivity (together wrth any donations and interest on deposits), supports a range of further actiVFties benefiting the public:_ (i) The Society provides study grants to members who are students, early Caer researchers and independent scholars (membership being open to anyone). (li) The Soctety organises and funds scholarty meetings, workshops. seminars and nars, attendan at which is not confined to members. fiii) The Sooetys subStrtIal newsletter Chemical IntelligenGe is available free to the general public online.. it advertises and reports not only the Society's events and adivities but those of other organisations involved in the history of alchemy arKI chemisty. The Sooety also maintains a website with similar objedives. (Èv) SoUrs of Alchemy and Chemistry, an occasional sUppment to Ambrx. is avalat4e * no extra cost to full instrtutional subsuibets to the relevant annual volume of Ambix and to members subscribing for the relevant year. The first supplement was also available at a subsidised pric8 to the genal public. (v) The Soaety's Morris Awafd. Partington PrEe, and Oxford Part 11 Prrze are awar(led to scholars from time to time regardless of whether they ar8 members of Soaety. NB.. In 2020 and 2021 the twstees have adapted the Society's operations and activities in response to the restrictions on fa-tO-faCe meetings and travel durin the covi(k19 andemic. Section E Financial review Brlel statement of the charity's policy on rnserves The level of reserves has been raised to £140,000 (agreed by the Trustees at the Council rtbeeting on 18 March 2022}.
