Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Improvements
2021 saw further improvements to the club’s facilities, and the club surroundings now offer greater public benefit to our village.
Funding was secured for a substantial wooden shelter which, during Covid restrictions, eliminated the need for people to enter the small club hut in inclement weather.
Additional seating was bought, and to improve the lawned and garden areas, a water butt and 2 compost bins were purchased. The grassed area was extended & reseeded.
Our thanks to all who provided funding, including Shadwell Parish Council & our local ward councillors, and also to our volunteers for giving their time.
Membership
The number of members was 189
Seniors 80, U3A/Student 16, Juniors 54 Under 8’s 25, Life members 4
Coaching
Careful planning by the Head Coach, and adhering to Covid guidelines, meant coaching sessions were offered for most the year. These included Junior sessions after school & at weekends, and Tennis Camps during school holidays. Thanks to a grant from Leeds City Council’s Outer North East Community Committee, some subsided After School Tennis was available on Mondays & Fridays and School Holiday Tennis which over 70 children attended.
Adult coaching sessions were also offered & well attended, with group sessions on Monday & Wednesday evenings, and individual sessions available throughout the week.
Events
When Covid restrictions permitted, events were held and very well supported. Weekly social tennis events took place when permitted, including :-
University of the Third Age (retired / over 55’s)
This weekly, Thursday morning activity, has now been running for approximately 5 years & the number of participants continues to increase. Members of the U3A and senior members are welcome and play throughout the year in almost all weather conditions.
Rusty Racquets When evening light permits, Rusty Racquets, for lapsed or adult players new to the game, takes place on Tuesday evenings.
To support Shadwell Shows fundraising campaign, our facilities were made available for a Summer Afternoon Tea, which raised funds for both organisations.
Our thanks the Shadwell News & Shadwell Post Office who continue to help us by publicising our events.

Section E Financial review
Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
Shadwell Tennis Club is in a strong financial position and holds 2 bank accounts.
The Current account held £4556 at year end & is used for the day to day running costs & ongoing improvements of the club. The Savings account held £40099 at year end & will be used for a major project – court resurfacing – in the coming 12 to18 months.
Details of any funds materially in deficit
Further financial review details (Optional information)
You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:
-
the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);
-
how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;
-
investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.
The club’s principal sources of funding are membership fees, which cover the fixed costs of running the club, and grants, which are used to cover the costs of improvements and subsidised coaching.
Income from membership fees was approximately 40% higher than the previous year at £3274. The increase in membership was due to outdoor tennis being one of the few activities permitted during Covid restrictions
- Income from grants was £24721
Expenditure during the year has supported the club’s objectives in providing tennis facilities for village residents, with far higher numbers than previous years participating in tennis at the club. Improvements to the club’s outdoor social facilities - the wooden shelter & additional seating – have proved excellent investments.
