Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 1st Aug 2024 to 31th July 2025

Charity name: Hungarian School Woking

Charity registration number: 1188993

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 The aim of the Hungarian School Woking is to
provide Hungarian language and cultural
education to children living in Woking and the
surrounding areas, for the benefit of the wider
community. As a supplementary school, it offers
weekend activities delivered according to a
structured timetable and led by qualified teachers
and dedicated volunteers.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The school year continued to be organised into
two semesters, each consisting of nine sessions.
The programme commenced on 9 September
2024 and was promoted through the School’s
Facebook page as well as several
Hungarian-focused Facebook groups.
The School offers local families regular
opportunities to meet and practise the Hungarian
language at the Church of England Primary
School in Send, Woking. These activities
supported participants’ overall well-being by
fostering a sense of community among families
with shared interests in Hungarian cultural
heritage and folk traditions.
Throughout the year, we organised a range of
cultural and community events, including National
Holiday celebrations (Revolution and
Independence Day), a Christmas event, Carnival,
Mother’s Day, Children’s Day, St Nicholas Day,
and various day trips.
The school was pleased to host several guest
contributors during the year. Péter and Viktória
Utasi led engaging Hungarian folk dance
sessions, while Dr Judit Navracsics delivered an
informative lecture for parents on raising bilingual
children. In addition, the HubArt art group
presented an outstanding performance for our
pupils in celebration of International Children’s
Day.
During the 2024–25 academic year, the school
participated in the Hungarian Rákóczi
Association’s Diaspora Programme. Seventeen
students aged 10–15, accompanied by three
teachers, took part in a week-long camp in
Hungary. The programme offers Hungarian
young people living in the diaspora, as well as
educators working within diaspora communities,
the opportunity to participate in an educational
study trip to Hungary.
The objectives of the programme include:

Introducing participants to the traditions
and built heritage that shape Hungarian
history and culture in the Carpathian
Basin through experiential learning
activities.

Encouraging the development of
relationships between Hungarian youth
living in the diaspora and those in the
Carpathian Basin, while strengthening
their sense of Hungarian identity.

Supporting the development of
Hungarian language skills with the
guidance of qualified professionals.

Strengthening connections between
Hungarians living in the diaspora and the
motherland by fostering new networks
and expanding cooperation across
diaspora communities at a
pan-Hungarian level.

Enhancing the effectiveness of
knowledge transfer related to national
identity in the diaspora, while enabling
participants to gain first-hand experience
in Hungary and broaden their intellectual,
cultural, and methodological
understanding.

Inspiring Hungarians living in diaspora
regions to connect with and raise
awareness of their local Hungarian
organisations and associations.

Providing professional development
opportunities for teachers working in the
diaspora and strengthening their
professional networks.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The trustees of the Hungarian School Woking
Charity present their annual report and audited
accounts for the year ended July 2025 and

SORP reference

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The charity fulfilled its objectives by delivering
regular education in the Hungarian language, folk
songs, dance, literature, history, and traditional
arts and crafts to children aged 0–18, as well as
to adults. During the 2024-25 academic year, the
semester was held at the Church of England
Primary School in Send, Woking.
To ensure inclusivity, members experiencing
financial or other disadvantages were able to
participate in activities free of charge or at a
reduced cost, ensuring that events remained
accessible to all. In addition, the charity provided
support and advice to individuals in need and
promoted personal development and
employability through volunteering opportunities
and coaching.
The year was a particularly active one for
Hungarian School Woking, with approximately
150 participants engaged in regular sessions,
organised day trips, and open events for children
and their families.

Financial Review

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 Thanks to careful financial planning and
close monitoring of expenditure, the charity
was able to manage increased venue rental
costs and remain financially stable through
the challenging period. Membership fees
covered core expenses, allowing the
organisation to retain a modest reserve at
the end of the 2024–2025 financial year.
In addition, Hungarian School Woking was
awarded £19,734 by The National Lottery
Community Fund as well as 2,000,000 HUF
(cca £4,326) by the Bethlen Gabor Fund to
support the continued growth and wellbeing
of our community.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 We aim to maintain a reserve equivalent to
approximately one year’s venue rental costs,
ensuring that even with a membership of
around 150, we can continue operating for a
full year without compromising the quality or
value of the services we provide to our
members.
