Somerset Councils financial difficulties are expected to have a long-term effect on the grants made to the South West Heritage Trust and in turn, The Museum of Somerset.

We work closely with the South West Heritage Trust supporting them with grants for acquisitions but also support the Museum of Somerset with direct purchases to enable them to continue with a varied and consistent programme of events for the public. We have recently increased membership fees, giving a variety of types of membership to enable us to keep our funds to a level we consider satisfactory.

In December 2023, £4,800 was given to The Museum of Somerset to assist with the cost of displaying the Cheddar Brooch, the Friends having contributed to £2,000 to the purchase price in the previous year. In May 2024, £5,000 was given to The Museum of Somerset to help with the acquisition of the Chew Valley Hoard. The hoard is 2,528 coins dating from the mid-11th century, very shortly after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The hoard was found in the Chew Valley, Somerset, in 2019.
