Somerset Councils financial difficulties are expected to have a long-term effect on the grants made to the South West Heritage Trust and in turn, The Museum of Somerset. 

We work closely with the South West Heritage Trust supporting them with grants for acquisitions but also support the Museum of Somerset with direct purchases to enable them to continue with a varied and consistent programme of events for the public. We have recently increased membership fees, giving a variety of types of membership to enable us to keep our funds to a level we consider satisfactory.

Monthly lectures, those during BST being face to face at The Museum of Somerset, whilst those during GMT are by Zoom. Regular newsletters. Occasional visits to places of interest. Annual lecture by a well-known speaker. All activities are advertised, and reports of meetings are displayed on the website and sent to local newspapers.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

Annual programme of lectures and an Annual Lecture by a well-known **Summary of the main** speaker which encourage members of the public to join the Friends of the **achievements of the charity** Museum of Somerset, thus enabling their subscriptions to be used to **during the year** support The Museum of Somerset. In December 2023, £4,800 was given to The Museum of Somerset to assist with the cost of displaying the Cheddar Brooch, the Friends having contributed to £2,000 to the purchase price in the previous year. In May 2024, £5,000 was given to The Museum of Somerset to help with the acquisition of the Chew Valley Hoard. The hoard is 2,528 coins dating from the mid-11th century, very shortly after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The hoard was found in the Chew Valley, Somerset, in 2019. It is one of the largest finds of Norman coins in the UK.

Membership subscriptions are the chief source of funds, supplemented by the Annual Lecture, the sale of second-hand books permanently on display at The Museum, occasional plant sales, raffles, and quizzes. At present £3,640 is reserved to help with the purchase of a lectern for use by any speakers visiting The Museum (£130). A further £1,000 is reserved towards the purchase of a Roman Ring. The remaining £2510 is for The Museum to use in ways that will enhance their visitors’ experience.
