Para 1.17 and
1.19
The Opera Makers began the process of
producing Hopes and Fears, a new opera
based on the music of Debussy created with
the support of Shine Cancer Support UK and
telling the stories of two women living with
incurable cancer, to be performed at
Grimeborn Opera Festival in summer 2020
(this project was then postponed until
summer 2021 due to Covid restrictions). In
the autumn we presented a livestreamed
masterclass from the Arts Club in central
London, with Della Jones, featuring four
emerging artists. The Opera Makers also
produced a series of short videos entitled
"The 12 DAYS (Ditties, Arias & Yuletide
Shenanigans) of Christmas", and raising
funds for the emerging artists involved.
These activities contributed to the purposes
of the charity including, without limitation, to
the advancement of the education of
musicians at the start of their professional
careers, and was the first step towards
achieving our mission of staging accessible
operas and developing new artistic and
social collaborations.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 The Trustees confirm that they have had
regard to the Charity Commission guidance
on public benefit.

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The Charity secured funds from Arts Council
England to support Hopes & Fears, a new
opera based on the music of Debussy and
created with Shine Cancer Support UK (to
be performed September 2021). This
project will provide paid work and training to
emerging artists as well as bringing opera to
a broad audience and promoting the
relevance of the artform, while building new
collaborations with other social enterprises
and testing new ways of creating work.
The Charity assumed The Opera Makers
CIC. By becoming a charity; The Opera
Makers CIO committed publicly to its core
objectives, and opened up broad
opportunities for fundraising to support its
goals.
The Charity produced a live-streamed and
professionally recorded masterclass with its
patron, Della Jones, offering 4 emerging
artists a platform to train and perform during
a global pandemic, and also providing them
with vital recorded materials for auditions
etc. The masterclass was watched by over
1,500 people online.
The Charity produced a series of "tongue in
cheek" videos inspired by the 12 Days of
Christmas, reaching an audience of over
1,000 online and raising in excess of £800
(received in the following financial year) for
the artists involved, all of whom had lost
Christmas singing income due to the
pandemic.

Achievements against
objectives set
Para 1.41 The key objectives of The Opera Makers
CIO's activities in the financial year were (i)
to plan and secure appropriate resources for
the production of the first full show of The
Opera Makers CIO, entitled "Hopes &
Fears", scheduled to take place in 2021 and
(ii) to promote a masterclass for young
singers led by The Opera Makers CIO's
patron, Della Jones. These key objectives
align with the objectives set out in The
Opera Makers CIO's Constitution.
The Trustees are satisfied that this was
clearly achieved as further detailed in this
report.
Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set
Para 1.41 The forecast cost of Hopes & Fears
(including "in-kind" support) has been set at
£35,777 and it was the objective to raise
sufficient funds to cover this requirement. As
at the end of this financial year, £12,121 has
been raised towards the production of Hopes
& Fears. The Opera Makers also formed key
relationships with other funding bodies, and
partnerships with "in-kind" supporters whose
funding activities were then suspended in
this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
It is therefore expected that in the next
financial year the CIO will be able to raise all
outstanding funds for this project.
Investment performance
against objectives
Para 1.41 Not Applicable. The Opera Makers CIO does
not currently have sufficient funds to allow
investment.
