The Development Plan commitied us to developing the core activities of the Sanctuary. maintsining the English teaching programme and administering the A$uM Seekers Support FurKI. Our Chair, David Beword, sel about securing fvnding that would enable us to cover the costs of the Sanctuary. In Juty he mel with the Leader of the Council who gave her supwrt for a fvNling award that woukl cover runniro costs arKI pay for our keyworker. Sadly. Dwd dhg not see the fruits of his hard work and devotion to oui (2use. He was tsken ill and died on 1" September, not long before the funding award was approved. Peter Baloknn. a relalNely new Iruslee. stepped up into the Fo, to help sleef the trustee bjdy through this dIffUrt periLMJ. Unfortunatety. lan was diagnosed wlh a serious health problem and has had to step back temporarily. We hope to wekome him back once he has recovered from major surgery. Sue Awon ined the trustee bringing her business expfftnce to the role. She has updated the WDCOS website and ensured that donations can be more easity made via the site and in person via uphjated 'tap and g). equipmenL rhe Sanctuary Weionika, our paid kewrker 8nd fiTrl official emphw. ensured thal the S8nctU8ry continued to thrive. A new volunteer transformed our social media profile 8NI cash donations began to rise. The drop-in opened every Wednesday and Frid8y from 10.(K) to 15.W. providiry a friendty welo)me for a5uM seekers and relugees, offering a safe space. practic31 support. snpOsting and help wrth probjem-solving. We typicalty welcomed around 60 visltors a week. Our elolhing store volunteers continued to process requests for clothing from the initial a$M accommodation cenlres and also directy lo asWum seekers and refugees in need. Typically. around 40 people per week requestsd at leasl one item of cbthirrfJ, aTrJ sometimes this number woukl exceed 80. The food store operated throughout the year, with the number of retipients almost doublirvj over the year. Generous funding from the Church of Latter Day SaFnts was approved and enabled us to buy rbew underwear and looar. as well as weekly groCerS lor the food store. The continued operation of the food store has only been made possible with support from tr* Church of the Latter-Day Saints. Teaching English lo this group of leamers has its challenges as abilty can vary from quile advanced English lo some who have had little schooling and may not be literate in their own language. The cWes also provide a safe space for leamets to share eXrienceS logelher in a relaxed atmosphere. One-hour on4ine classes take place Mow to Friday at 10.00 and 14.00. delivered by 10 volunteer teachers. Average attendance is S learners. Face-lo-face classes take place at Urban Houso reception centre once a week. Volunteer teachers run beginners, intermediate and thanced groups. A second weekty session was started in 2023. divided into lower and higher level. The classes are well attended up lo 30+ but 1cjaIe the number of idents at Urban House. Projgct funding has ljeen gained from Prospei Small Grants. allowng us to run a Talking Tu8sdayE prcKJramme over a 6 month period. including improvised games and Er4Jlish teaching. Asylum Seekers, Support Fund An earfy and gssgnlial funclion of WDCOS ha5 been lo offer direct financial supp)rt to a limited number of asurn seekers who hav8 m recourse to fuThJs. through the A$uM Seeker SUprt Fund and this has conlinu8d through the past year. Most of Ihe [pIe helped by thi5 fund cannot18gally leave the county, are not allowed18g81ty to Work and have no recourse lo Publ Funds, they are trapped by the system. They &rUre difficult times in poverty and are INing in fear of ind&finite detention or deportation. The fund has three administrators who make decisions Co1ctr¥S1y. Each week a small payynent. M)ically £30,is made to an average of 10 individuals to cover their bas needs. They are also given a bag of groceries each weak. tsilored to their particular Tgquirements. Toiletries. clothes and household items aro shared as appropriate when available. These individuals and their families are known to thè administrators of the fund. who follow their progress and seek lo ensufe their ongoing We1HIng. There is an expectation that these individijals wll Iwo within the law and wll progS$ their legal cases. In many cases support is onty required for a limtted time before they are granted leave lo remain and gain the right to work.
