English Teaching Programme
We provided both on-line classes and fa￿￿lace classes. Teaching English lo this group of leamers has its
challenges as abilty can vary from quile advanced English lo some who have had little schooling and may not
be literate in their own language. The cWes also provide a safe space for leamets to share eX￿rienceS
logelher in a relaxed atmosphere.
One-hour on4ine classes take place Mow to Friday at 10.00 and 14.00. delivered by 10 volunteer teachers.
Average attendance is S learners. Feedback C￿rtY that these lessons are regarded by learners as an
enjoydble soc￿1 experience in addition to improving basic ErMJlish. Not bournl by gecmjraphy. il is possibte for
as￿UM seekers to maintain contact wth the group through on-line dasses, even if they are moved to another
part of the county, so helping lo mitpJate the negative effects on mentsl health when familiar routines and
relationships are abruptty severe)J.
Face-lo-face classes take place at Urban Houso reception centre once a week. Volunteer teachers run
beginners, intermediate and thanced groups. A second weekty session was started in 2023. divided into lower
and higher level. The classes are well attended up lo 30+ but ￿1c￿jaIe the number of ￿idents at Urban

allowed18g81ty to Work and have no recourse lo Publ￿ Funds, they are trapped by the system. They &r￿Ure
difficult times in poverty and are INing in fear of ind&finite detention or deportation. The fund has three
administrators who make decisions Co1￿ctr¥S1y. Each week a small payynent. M)ically £30,is made to an
average of 10 individuals to cover their bas￿ needs. They are also given a bag of groceries each weak. tsilored
to their particular Tgquirements. Toiletries. clothes and household items aro shared as appropriate when
available. These individuals and their families are known to thè administrators of the fund. who follow their
progress and seek lo ensufe their ongoing We1H￿Ing. There is an expectation that these individijals wll Iwo
within the law and wll prog￿S$ their legal cases. In many cases support is onty required for a limtted time
before they are granted leave lo remain and gain the right to work. The fuThJ can also be used for onewoff
PUTPQSeS, such as emergerw aco)mmodation. travel gxpenses to solicitors, ap￿Intments. or t6mporary
support for new Igfugegs setting up hcffie in the UK for Ihe first time.
