Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document	Para 1.17	The objects of the Mount Elgon Foundation, being undertaken for the public benefit in the Mount Elgon region and more widely in the republic of Kenya and the republic of Uganda, are: 1. the conservation of endangered elephants and their protection from extinction in particular, but not exclusively, by providing financial and other aid to support programs with the objective of protecting, monitoring, and advancing the conservation of those elephants; and 2. to further other such exclusively charitable purposes, which are charitable under the law of England and Wales, as the trustees may from time to time determine.

Para 1.17 and 1.19	The main activity of the Mount Elgon Foundation for the period has been to fund the Mount Elgon Elephant Project that seeks to protect the elephants of Mount Elgon in western Kenya and to promote sustainable livelihoods for the local community.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.	Para 1.20	The difference the Foundation’s work has made to its beneficiaries was to provide protection to the elephants of Mount Elgon and to commence support for sustainable livelihoods for local people. As regards benefits to society as a whole, the preservation of the ecosystem of Mount Elgon, given its key water tower role and large forested areas, is the provision of water to many millions of people regionally, while carbon sequestration by the forest provides an important benefit to the world wide community.

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period	Para 1.21	The charity holds c.£35k (c.£17k FY23) in cash funds with Barclays Bank, and a further c. £14k (c.£7k FY23) in cash funds with two overseas funds. These funds and funds raised since 31/3/24 give the Trustees confidence for the year ahead.

As the charity trustee5, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act 20111"the Art").
