Meetings of Trustees
Trustees met on the 3[rd] of March formally in person, and subsequently remotely to monitor progress regarding property transfer discussions on 5[th] May, 7[th] July, 1[st] September, 3[rd] November, 17[th] November.
Objects of the Charity for the Public Benefit
-
(1) To preserve the heritage of Simonsbath and Exmoor parish (in particular, but not exclusively, by preserving and maintaining buildings or sites of historic or architectural importance);

(2) To advance education in, and promote understanding and appreciation of, the history, heritage, culture and traditions of Simonsbath and Exmoor parish;

(3) The promotion for the benefit of the public of rural regeneration in areas of social and economic deprivation (and in particular in Simonsbath and Exmoor parish) by all or any of the following means:

(a) the maintenance, improvement or provision of public amenities;

(b) the preservation of buildings or sites of historic or architectural importance;

(c) the provision of recreational facilities for the public at large or those who by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances, have need of such facilities;

(d) the protection or conservation of the environment;

(e) such other means as may from time to time be determined subject to the prior written consent of the Charity Commission (“the Commission”); and
-
(4) To further or benefit the residents of Simonsbath and Exmoor parish and the neighbourhood, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.
In furtherance of these objects but not otherwise, the charity trustees shall have power to establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the Charity in furtherance of the above objects.
Achievements and Performance
The Trustees spent much of 2020 in negotiation with the Exmoor National Park Authority regarding the transfer of the former Simonsbath School to the Trust , with the intention that ultimately it will provide exhibition, interpretation and meeting space, whilst at the same time securing the future of this locally historically important building.
The cornavirus pandemic prevented Trustees meeting formally in person after March, but they met remotely on several occasions through the rest of the year to monitor progress and to advance the property negotiation.
Financial Review
The Trust was not required to make any expenditure in this year. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Trust found it difficult to open a bank account, largely due to the unwillingness of the major banks to engage with potential new customers.
Two donations totalling £2000, made by cheque, were held pending the establishment of the account; a third donation of £500 from Exmoor Parish Council was retained by the Council until such time as the Trust’s account was open.
