Minster Lions Club of York is active within the area of City of York and the surrounding suburbs and provides activlties which also serve people of other countries in the world. Our primary aim is to serve. Listed below are some of the activities our members have undertaken during this period. Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. Para 1.17 and 1.19 The Promotion of Citizenship The club has involved itself with several local groups. including the blind and partially sighted, local primary schools and nurseries. as well as Scout packs and other small charity groups, plus our local hospital, to learn about their ambitions and to nurture links to help future alliances. We have striven, for instance, to set up a prostate cancer testing centre with the hospital. Volunteering Approach As a means of advancing our cltizenship. we support the annual York Marathon and 10K Run by marshalling water stations.
Every member is a volunteer, and as such, decides to cover administrative costs and every penny goes to charity. We encourage other community groups to join us as volunteers in order that both parties can gain by achieving more with internal quality of service. Our Lions have been involved this year with a project caller ROAR, which is a competition where we as Lions work with local primary schools to invite them with their children to participate in a competition, whereby the pupils are asked to work in small groups to actively think, plan, participate to show their ideas of how they would change the wortd for the better, which are judged by an invited panel of judges. Two local schools have competed and this year Robert Wilkinson school in Strensall, York, won for the Northeast area of UK. At Christrnas our Rocking Rudolph project which is a device designed to entertain the public and particularly children, accompanied by Father Christmas fulfils a schedule over six weeks and is our major fundraiser. The Club is helped too by other charity volunteers and together achieved a significant fundraising total over the pr&Christmas period which will go to help local charities in need over the coming year. Poverty and Medical Relief The club makes annual donations to Lions International Foundation to help with Sight-First, Medic-Alert, and disaster funds. The club works locally with small charity groups who need aid with food and household requisites. The club manufactures. sells and distributes emergency toiletry packs for other Lions clubs. and notably donates to York hospitsl. It has sold packs to several Lion's clubs in the UK this year. The club distributes Message in a Bottle throughout York via promotions and events. A new project was initiated in 2022 called the Charity Partnership with the primary objective of giving targeted financial help to 3 local charities, being Age UK to help the sen40r and elderly* Home Start which aids small and single parent families in poverty and Door 84, a chari which concentrates on the
welfare of children and teenagers with a youth hostel. Each of the charities was asked to request targeted help up to £500 each per month, over the period, October until March inclusive to help specific individuals and families with their care. Three families or persons were given free weekly holidays to be spent at the Filey Chalet operated by Filey Lions Club and hired to other Lions Clubs. The Club continues to operate a project known as Library in a Box. which entails collecting, collating. and consigning unwanted children's books to Lions Clubs in Sri Lanka. Over 190,000 children's books have been sent so far at the end of this year. We are also involved with the collection of used spectacles and hearing aids from phamiacies. opticians, supemiarkets and surgeries. We have expanded our network ol collection points with over thirty bins within the York area. It has become very successful in that the public are constantly filling our bins. We sort and pack them into boxes for recycling. The spectscles and hearing aids will be sorted and reused by medical charities and eye camps in countries throughout Africa. Over the year Club members attended local, galas, fairs and carnivals to extend charity help and to improve public relationships.
