Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Educating and informing the public about
industrial archaeology is the primary
purpose of the Society. The holding of
lectures and fieldtrips, open to all, fulfils
that function. There are often visitors to
the Society’s events.
For preservation of heritage, the trustees
keep a close watch on planning
applications which may affect industrial
heritage, and they submit responses to
local authority planning departments.
The Society is frequently asked for
advice and information by members of
the public and is happy to respond where
possible. The Society is also consulted
by various researchers and local
authorities on matters of IA concern.
The Society has just celebrated its fiftieth
anniversary. Outreach talks were given to
five local history societies on the work of
SIAS. These five groups were deliberately
widely scattered across the county. A
half day meeting was held at which talks
were given showing the difference in
knowledge and approach to industrial
archaeology over five decades. Guests
from neighbouring A.I. societies attended
as well as members of this society.
