The holding of**<br>**lectures and fieldtrips, open to all, fulfils**<br>**that function. There are often visitors to**<br>**the Society’s events.**<br>**For preservation of heritage, the trustees**<br>**keep a close watch on planning**<br>**applications which may affect industrial**<br>**heritage, and they submit responses to**<br>**local authority planning departments.**<br>**The Society is frequently asked for**<br>**advice and information by members of**<br>**the public and is happy to respond where**<br>**possible. The Society is also consulted**<br>**by various researchers and local**<br>**authorities on matters of IA concern.**<br>**The Society has just celebrated its fiftieth**<br>**anniversary. Outreach talks were given to**<br>**five local history societies on the work of**<br>**SIAS. These five groups were deliberately**<br>**widely scattered across the county. A**<br>**half day meeting was held at which talks**<br>**were given showing the difference in**<br>**knowledge and approach to industrial**<br>**archaeology over five decades. Guests**<br>**from neighbouring A.I. societies attended**<br>**as well as members of this society.**|
