**industrial archaeology is the primary**
**purpose of the Society. The holding of**
**lectures and fieldtrips, open to all, fulfils**
**that function. There are often visitors to**
**the Society’s events.**
**For preservation of heritage, the trustees**
**keep a close watch on planning**
**applications which may affect industrial**
**heritage, and they submit responses to**
**local authority planning departments.**
**The Society is frequently asked for**
**advice and information by members of**
**the public and is happy to respond where**
**possible. The Society is also consulted**
**by various researchers and local**
**authorities on matters of IA concern.**
**The Society has just celebrated its fiftieth**
**anniversary. Outreach talks were given to**
**five local history societies on the work of**
**SIAS. These five groups were deliberately**
**widely scattered across the county. A**
**half day meeting was held at which talks**
**were given showing the difference in**
**knowledge and approach to industrial**
**archaeology over five decades. Guests**
**from neighbouring A.I. societies attended**
**as well as members of this society.**|
