1.1 Type of governing document
Constitution adopted 22[nd] August 2019
1.2 How the charity is constituted
Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
1.3 Trustee selection methods
Usually at the AGM, however constitution allows Trustees to be appointed at General meetings in between AGM’s.
Section 2. Objects and activities
2.1 Charitable purposes
The object of the charity is to advance the education of the public in the history and heritage of Hetton-le-Hole and District in particular but not exclusively through the provision of educational tours, talks and workshops.
2.2 Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees’ meetings.
Section 3. Activities and performance
3.1 Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period
The year of 2024-25 saw many of the projects and initiatives come to a conclusion.
As ever the work of the HCR200 project was overseen by a group of committed volunteers who served as Trustees and committee members which certainly helped raise the profile of Hetton, the Colliery Railway, the City of Sunderland and our place in world history.
A continued effort to include partners and organisations in the work was key, to network and to share the endeavours of the charity.
The work was maintained through the regular meetings of the trustees acting as the Finance and General Purposes’ Committee and also the various sub-committees which were updated to reflect the work going forward.
The various sub-committees continued to meet as and when necessary, whilst also using hybrid and virtual ways of working; feeding into the Finance and General Purposes Committee with their recommendations.
With many projects coming to an end and drawing to a conclusion the decision was made to terminate the contract of our Project Officer, Gemma O’Brien. Gemma had served us well as a charity and enabled HCR200 to make a considerable impact through the Carnival and the Bi-Centenary Conference. We wish Gemma well as she moves onto other initiatives and projects.

Education
-
Links are maintained with the local Primary Schools and special events take place during the Local History Month of May and also the Heritage Open Day Programme in September.
-
The Glass Sculpture remains on display at the Elemore Park centre although since its closure plans are in place to have it in display at ELCAP until the future of the Park’s buildings are confirmed.
Events
-
We hosted a Miners’ Picnic Event at ELCAP in the Summer of 2024 which was well received and a great attendance saw people of all ages get involved in the games, the arts, the crafts, the music and also the viewing of the HCR200 film which was presented on-repeat in the hall throughout the day.
-
The Hetton Lyons Banner was either displayed at the Hetton Miners’ Service in July and the Houghton Feast Display in October. Other than this the Banner was on display in ELCAP’s Heritage Room.
-
HCR200 supported Hetton Town Council as it celebrated its 50[th] Anniversary with both the Chair and Secretary making presentations at the 50[th] Anniversary Celebrations.
Partnerships
- Work has developed in relation to the tomb of Nicholas Wood and investigations are ongoing with funders, Sunderland City Council and the Durham Diocese as to the best course of action.
Technology
Two exciting projects are progressing well:
-
A kiosk based presentation which will quickly take a person through the history and significance of the Hetton Colliery Railway. Aimed at senior school age and above it is hoped to have a number of kiosks strategically located whether this be on a permanent or temporary basis.
-
The film utilising Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) presenting Hetton and the railway in the 1920’s is continuing and discussions with Sunderland University

are being held to see if a student could adopt our concept as their research subject and this is ongoing.
Public Benefit
The project has been designed to include a diverse offering; so that each element attracts a range of individuals. This approach enables us to reach a wide audience; and benefit a large number of people; from those with little or no knowledge of Hetton Colliery Railway to railway enthusiasts, to those with an interest mining, local and social history, and to raise the aspirations of local children and young people to reach their potential.
The local area suffers due to the community’s level of socio-economic circumstances so projects like Hetton Colliery Railway 200 are ever important in supporting local people to feel a sense of community and belonging.
Section 4. Financial Review
4.1 Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
Following the Bicentenary celebrations of November 2022 all of our work is very much project based and this is reflected in the year end balance of only £366.71 at the year end.
All of the £366.71 is unrestricted and all ongoing and future projects will be fully funded and grant applications submitted as and when.
HCR200’s Reserves Policy states that reserves amounting to one-third of the Annual Unrestricted Expenditure should be held in reserve and this amount was not met at the year end so it is hoped that the sale of publications in the new Financial Year will see this rectified.
Section 6. Declaration
The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
