Section 1. Structure, governance and management

1.1 Type of governing document Constitution adopted 22[nd] August 2019

1.2 How the charity is constituted Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)

1.3 Trustee selection methods

Usually at the AGM, although constitution allows Trustees to be appointed at General meetings in between AGM’s.

Section 2. Objects and activities

2.1 Charitable purposes

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees’ meetings.

Section 3. Activities and performance

3.1 Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

The year in question began as the previous one finished with many of the meetings taking place online until lockdown restrictions allowed in-person meetings and since that time, most of the meetings have taken a hybrid format to allow the greatest participation amongst members.

The work was maintained through the regular meetings of the trustees acting as the Finance and General Purposes’ Committee and also the various sub-committees.

Major fundraising was undertaken during the year in order to recruit an Events and Project officer. Sufficient funding had been secured that we were able to advertise the post in September and Gemma O’Brien, the successful candidate was able to commence the work in October 2021 on a flexible, self-employed basis.

The appointment of Gemma as Events and Project Officer has proved most worthwhile and has enabled the Charity extend its work through significant partnership working.

The various sub-committees continued to meet as and when necessary, feeding into the Finance and General Purposes Committee their recommendations.

The work of each committee and area of work is summarised below:

Finance & General Purposes (Trustees)

Lectures, Publications & Exhibitions

Schools Liaison

MBC Ceramics/Norfolk Street Art were commissioned to create a locomotive sculpture. The work was to be carried out with local schools; each individual creating a glass tile that would be fused in to the final sculpture; work around the historical importance of Hetton Colliery Railway was also embedded in to the sessions to further children and young peoples understanding of their heritage and local history. 21 sessions across nine schools were delivered, with 420 individuals engaging. The sculpture is now at fabrication stage.

Hetton Carnival

Following a two year hiatus, plans for attendance at Hetton Carnival 2022 have begun. A sub-committee has been created to steer plans, and there are plans for a learning tent (marquee), a vehicle parade and vehicle display to bring the attention to the wider public of the importance of The Hetton Railway Bicentenary. The visitors anticipated runs in to the thousands, and travel from a distance to attend so this will be an excellent opportunity to reach the masses. It is worthy of note that all activities provide by HCR 200 at the Carnival will be free to the public.

Legacy

Two key projects are now firmly established; being lead by Sunderland City Council.

Banners

Durham Banner Makers are engaged to complete Hetton Lyons ahead of the 2022 Durham Miners Gala. A design has been chosen around the theme of “the three firsts.”

Public Benefit

The project has been designed to include a diverse offering; so that each element attracts a variety of audiences. This approach enables us to reach a wide audience; and benefit a large number of people; from those with little or no knowledge of Hetton Colliery Railway to railway enthusiasts ,to those with an interest mining, local and social history history.
