Section 3. Activities and performance
3.1 Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period
Following the onset of the COVID pandemic in March 2020, meetings of HCR200 took on a new format in order to keep the planning of the bicentenary on track.
The planned ‘Open Meeting’ and AGM for April 2020 were postponed and the work was maintained through monthly online meetings of the trustees as they met under the auspices of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
The various sub-committees met at ad-hoc intervals feeding into the Finance and General Purposes Committee as and when required.
An Open meeting was held online via Zoom in November 2020 and an online AGM via Zoom was held when we welcomed Vic Branfoot and Stuart Porthouse to the Trustee body.
As reported in our previous Annual Report were saddened to learn of the health issues faced by our founding chair, Colin Mountford, and it was with regret that we accepted Colin Mountford’s resignation on 4[th] April 2020 which was followed with the devastating news that Colin passed away on 16[th] May 2020.
As Trustees and members, we wish to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation of Colin’s knowledge, skills and drive in establishing Hetton Colliery Railway 200 into a registered charity with a planned calendar of events to

commemorate the bi-centenary of this significant event. It is hoped that Colin’s memory can be incorporated into our future plans.
The work of the charity overseen in this difficult year was overseen by the various sub-committees and over the financial year in question achieved the following:
General meetings held at two-month intervals, five sub-committees set up, namely

Work progressed developing:
-
the glass scale model of the Lyon loco
-
the virtual reality projects.
-
the 3D modelling project
Hetton Carnival
The COVID pandemic saw the need to cancel both the 2020 and 2021 Hetton Carnival and therefore the Carnival Committee has yet to meet but are fully aware of the plans of HCR200 to be fully involved in the 2022 Carnival.
Legacy
The City Council adopted two new projects during the pandemic which impact upon
the legacy of the HCR200 project:
- The Stephenson Trail: the Chair and the Secretary sit on the Stephenson Trail Task and Finish Group which is a group of officers and elected

members from the Coalfield, East and West Area in addition to interested parties such as ourselves.
- Elemore Park: the Chair and the Secretary sit on this Task and Finish Group and the plans look to retain aspects of heritage relating to both the former Elemore Colliery and also the Hetton Colliery Railway.
As well as the above the Secretary gave a presentation to the 3Together Big Local in relation to the project and also the desire to see two new Community Banners for both the Hetton and Moorsley Collieries and it is hoped that the Big Local would be keen to support this venture.
The only other item of note was the provision of an anniversary mug for local school children which is to be considered in 2022.
Section 4. Financial Review
4.1 Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
Cash at bank at 31/03.21 was £2967.73.
Grants received during the year were as follows:
| Wearmouth Development Community Trust | Publicity | £912.00 |
|---|---|---|
| Sunderland Heritage Action Partnership | Publicity | £1,000.00 |
| Hetton Town Council | Glass Sculpture | £500.00 |
The coming year will see the charity further develop new funding streams once the funding is secured to employ a project officer.
Section 5. Impact of COVID-19
4.1 Brief statement on the implications created by the COVID 19 pandemic
The COVID pandemic had a major impact on the work of HCR200 as we were unable to visit any local history groups and related societies to promote the work so the work through the Facebook was key in keeping a wide number of people informed of the work as well as introducing many people to the work of the charity for the first time.
Fortunately our plans started well ahead and the pandemic will not see our plans for 2022 change much from what was originally planned.
