Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To promote social inclusion and relieve the
needs of those affected by social isolation
or loneliness for the public benefit by
assisting people over the age of 18 years
old (particularly but not exclusively men),
within Clevedon and the surrounding area,
from becoming excluded, isolated or lonely
and assisting them to integrate into the
community and society through the
provision of facilities in which they can
meet socially to undertake, jointly or
individually, woodwork, metalwork, craft,
creative, or recreational activities, learn or
pass on skills and knowledge and support
each other.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Gathering socially, meeting together twice
weekly in a relaxed welcoming
environment, sharing working on our Shed
and personal projects, thereby promoting
social inclusion and relieving the needs of
those affected by social isolation or
loneliness.
Working in small teams on outreach
projects in the community.
Undertaking projects for other charities,
deserving organisations and individuals in
the community.
Making mainly wooden items to donate to
other charities, individuals, sell or give
away in return for donations toward our
funds.

SORP reference
Policy on grant making Para 1.38 None – we do not make grants.
Policy on social investment
including program related
investment
Para 1.38 None – we have no investments.
Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 Our four Trustees are volunteers and they
invest considerable personal time and
often donating their incidental expenses in
advancing our charity’s aims and
achievements.
Six other volunteers from our members
were project management leaders to wisely
use the major £10k grant we received.
Other We have rent free use of a building leased
by two amateur dramatic clubs from North
Somerset Council. They only use it in the
evening, we only use it in the daytime.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 We estimate our various activities, listed
below, have benefitted over 300 members
of the local and wider community by
carrying out the activities listed below: -
Undertaking general clearance and
maintenance of a North Somerset owned
park and gardens adjacent to our facility.
Without this ongoing work this park would
become overwhelmed by weeds and fallen
tree debris. This continued during
lockdown, when the park was very well
used for the permitted socially distanced
meeting outside and for exercising.
We repaired furniture and restored 5 large
outside patio benches for Clevedon
Community Centre a much-used
community hub.
We continued repairing and renovating
garden tools for members of the
community.
We were busy making more wooden toys
and a rocking horse and donating them to
a Springboard Opportunity Nursery for pre-
school children with behaviour problems
A team were disassembling used
prosthetic legs for shipment to 11 African
countries by the charity Legs4Africa. This
is an ongoing task.
We landscaped our area, built a ramp for
access to our workshop, improved and
enlarged a wooden decking area to enable
our members to meet socially and take
refreshments outside and created a small
boarder garden to grow herbs and plants.

Achievements against
objectives set
Para 1.41 We continued to meet our objectives.
In reply to questions about how our
members benefitted by coming to our Shed
facilities, answers included:
“I now have a reason to get out of bed each
day”
“It beats day time TV anytime”
“I used to have no friends and now I have
made some great new friends and I’m
never lonely”.
It is evidence of achieving our purpose.
We have maintained our planned growth in
membership, which stands at 27 (August
21, but currently 40 in June 2022).
Performance of fundraising
activities against objectives
set
Para 1.41 We greatly exceeded our fundraising
targets this year.
We obtained a £10k grant from Quartet, a
fundholding charity in Bristol, to be used to
improve our facility, to buy professional
tools and equipment, to install a access
ramp to enable those with mobility issues to
negotiate our sloping ground to use our
workshop and to purchase all the PPE and
cleaning materials to be able to declare our
premises Covid-19 Secure and then be
open between the pandemic lockdown
periods.
Each time we have set up a stall at local
fairs and markets we have exceeded our
objectives in terms of funds raised.
Investment performance
against objectives
Para 1.41 Not applicable
Other Like all UK Men’s Shed we had to close
due to the Covid-19 Virus crisis during the
lockdown periods; however, I held Zoom
virtual coffee break meeting twice each
week, over 100 in total. Between our
trustees we rang our members weekly to
check they were OK ans were not in need
of anything.
We had a Caretaker open our building each
week to help air the building, carry out
building improvements and maintenance
and ensure all our tools and equipment
were maintained in good working order.
Our Shedders carried on with certain
Outreach projects in the Community and
many of them made things in their own
workshops and sheds to donate to other
charities, or for our charity to sell to raise
funds.
We the Trustees were active in planning to
reopen between Covid lockdowns following
all the laws, rules and guidelines, which we
successfully achieved being open
whenever we were permitted.

Financial Review

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 We have sufficient funds to meet our
expected expenditure. Our annual
subscriptions are due on the day following
the end of this period 1stAugust annually.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 We retain sufficient funds to meet our
liabilities for utilities, electricity, water, fire
safety equipment inspections and
maintenance for the next 3 months.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £400
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 Not applicable
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 Not applicable
Explanation of any
uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going
concern
Para 1.23 We have no concerns because we could
easily increase the size of our membership
and increase our income, we are able to
produce wooden items to sell, carryout
small repairs and DIY jobs often doing this
in return for donations.
Our Men’s Shed is growing, without
publicising it and due to the community
work we do we are respected and
supported with numerous offers of
assistance.

members.
A major Bristol Charity fundholders:
Quartet awarded us a £10k grant to
improve our facility, buy profession tools
and equipment and ensure our facility met
all rules and guidance to allow it to open
between and after the Covid lockdowns.
Making mainly wooden items to sell at local
fairs and markets, often just for donations.
Making and repairing items for members of
the community in return for donations.
Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46 None we have no investments
A description of the principal
risks facing the charity
Para 1.46 Lack of sufficient subscribed members.
Eviction from our current building, by the
leaseholders, two amateur dramatic clubs.
That is unlikely as we have a great working
relationship and help maintain and improve
the building for them.
North Somerset Council. Withdrawing our
5-year Licence to Occupy the land adjacent
to our workshop building. There have been
no signs of that occurring. Unlikely as we
have built up a good relationship with the
relevant Council officers.
