| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | in 2019 and 2020 despite the impact of the Covid- 19 pandemic: 1) Membership in 2020 increased to 548 (2019: 511). 2) Continued support was provided for honey bee research via the project known as 'Eastern Region Research Studentship' (EARS). This is directly sponsoring a PhD Student at Newcastle University to carry out research into why chronic bee paralysis virus is becoming more of an issue. 3) Our programme of training courses for beginner and improver beekeepers was interrupted in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Online workshops were held for members wishing to sit the British Beekeepers Association module exams held in November 2020. Preparations were made to provide an online Introduction to Beekeeping Course for spring 2021; participants of the interrupted 2020 course were either given a refund or free transfer to the 2021 course. 4) Outside events play an important part of our out-reach to the public. In 2019, we attended |
2
various public events (Woburn Abbey Garden Show, Taste Bedford, Fibre East, Bromham Mill Apple Day) and held a Honey Festival in Wobum Abbey gardens. These attracted considerable public interest and enabled dissemination of information on bees to a wide cross-section of adults and children. Visits were made to 5 schools (nursery and primary) to talk to children about bees and their importance. In 2020, many planned events were cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions although the Association pioneered holding the annual Honey Show as a virtual event including show classes for children. 5)Autumn and winter talks were held in 2019 (in person) and 2020 (online via zoom). These were open to members and public alike. 6) Members provided a swarm capture and swarrn placement service for the public. 7) Our District Advisors continued to support members with any beekeeping issues or problems helping to ensure appropriate management and health of members bees. 8) Our bulk purchase scheme provides members with the opportunity to obtain beekeeping supplies locally at a reasonable price thereby helping members to care for the bees in their charge.. 9) In 2019, the Committee appointed a working group to investigate how to enhance outreach to schools and other youth and adult groups. The working group developed a means to improve the interchange of visit request information with such outside groups and a document giving guidance to members who support such events, incorporating safeguarding and risk assessment.
